That's a good question. It makes a lot of statements cleverly disguised as a horror movie. I do think it's one of John Carpenter's best movies. It does have one of the best fight scenes in conema history.

For 80s horror movies, "The Fog" (1980) and "Fright Night" (1985) are IMHO better choices than any of the films in this poll, "House" (1987) is a weird horror/comedy blend with great practical effects, and if we stretch the time period just a touch, "Phantasm" (1979) is creepy and bizarre.

I read "Pet Sematary a few years before the first movie came out. The book scared the 💩² out of me. The movie does not hold a candle to the book. If you know the story, try reading the original. Even King has gone on record as saying it's the one story that scared him so much he almost didn't publish it.

Pet Semetary might not be enjoyable for you, mostly because it is the EXACT OPPOSITE of Homeward Bound. It's a great movie, don't get me wrong, but it's a difficult watch. I would recommend Christine instead. That's just me ^_^

Pumpkinhead is an underrated gem from the 1980's and deserving of a watch. The monster is great and the movie is definitely scary. Going to keep mentioning "The Descent" until it becomes a part of Ashleigh's subconscious lol. This is a perfect night vision movie.

My opinion 1984 Children of the Corn sucks. Not scary and so not what Stephen King had for his vision. I feel like he wrote that one off, kinda like Kubrick's Shining, but don't quote me, lol. That being said, you're really making me choose over the other Stephen King offerings on this poll. Christine and Pet Sematary rule. I'll go with Pet Sematary. Both are effectively scary for me, but Pet Sematary takes the prize between them :)

Also, while it's great these are all '80s movies and '80s movies are of course 40 years old now, when people say "more recent films will always beat older films," I think they mean "before 1970." After 1970 is when you start getting the still comparatively contemporary classics like The Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars, and Back to the Future versus actual old Hollywood classics like Singin' in the Rain, Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, and It's a Wonderful Life.

I voted for They Live because it's an amazing movie, but that's definitely more action than horror, so you could watch it at any time of the year. For a John Carpenter movie that will scare you, definitely go with Prince of Darkness or In the Mouth of Madness over They Live.

I would love to see Children of the Corn because yes there are scary moments, but once you come upon Isaac you will either laugh or wonder how a twenty year old man who looks nine years old was able to convince the entire population of children in the town to do what they did
