Vampires don't actually hate garlic. Garlic was hung around the dead so people would smell the garlic, warning them a vampire was approaching.

I hope your granddad gets better soon. The reason that Jerry is always eating fruit is because the actor, Chris Sarandon, decided that Jerry was bitten by a fruit bat and made it part of his characterization. Ed is still a vampire at the end of the film because he was killed in his vampire form but Peter removed the stake and undid his death. The holy water was just tap water, it was never blessed. That is why Jerry was not affected by it. There is a fun documentary about this film called "You're So Cool Brewster: The Story of Fright Night." I highly recommend it.

As for what Johnathan was...In some vampire movies the vampire has a familiar, for want of a better term, that they imbue with a portion of their power without fully turning them. That way the vampire has someone of strength to protect them, or be a public face, during the day.

For a really cheesy, cute vampire movie from the 80's, try My Best Friend is a Vampire. Robert Sean Leonard (Dead Poets Society, though I prefer him in Much Ado About Nothing or Swing Kids, most know him from House, MD) and Rene Auberjonois (Star Trek, DS9) are so campy and over the top. It's adorable.
