I think this movie works better if you watched it as a kid the first time. I grew up with this and always loved it, but the version i always watched was about 30 minutes shorter. It really cut down on those song/dance scenes and the soccer game. Definitely think you would have preferred that version. No Peopling Allowed

The preacher was played by Roddy MacDowell. I'm not sure if you know his work yet, but he had a long career, starting out as a child actor, notably in "Lassie Come Home", where he appeared with fellow child actress Elizabeth Taylor. In the original "Planet of the Apes", he was Cornelius, and he appeared in the sequels too. I first saw him (probably) in "The Haunting of Hell House", a really-not-fantastically-good haunted house movie which I love. And he could be very funny. As mentioned above, definitely was running on nostalgia. I'm going to start rewatching things before I recommend them. Not all things from past times age well.

It's fine you didn't like it, Ashleigh, I'm in the same boat. Maybe those who voted for it were running on nostalgia, which is fine, but I've never seen an adult first-time viewer get into this movie, even if they were huge musical fans. To me, it's something that needs to be seen in childhood if someone is going to have a chance at liking it, and even then, not everyone will. I turned it off as a child; it just wasn't my cup of tea, and still isn't.
