🕑 Added 2022-02-01 15:34:08 +0000 UTCI’ve finally found the time to sit and write news specifically for Patreon. I think that’s why I’ll make this public, even though it’s a doubtful bonus to read the ravings of a paranoid old man.
I have a lot of things on my mind, and I’ve got something to tell you about the development process, but I just couldn’t find the time to sit and write about it. If someone’s keeping a close eye on our game on Steam, you’ve probably noticed that we had a small argument with our players there. It got me all riled up and I didn’t want to bring those negative emotions here. After all, most of the people here actually like what we’re doing. I tried writing a news post from time to time but after reading it, I’d always just delete it, thinking that it’s best not to release that.
Just so I’m clear, there’s no need to morally support us. Everything’s fine and it’s all under control. We’ve received more money than I’d planned considering the current situation on Steam. And that was our main goal.
Sad thing is that there was little to no feedback. And when I talk about feedback, I mean some constructive ideas and suggestions. Of course, it’s clear we need to work on balancing the game but that’s where your feedback would be useful. We should also work on Ilga’s house where MC is currently residing; some small events would be nice. However, that’s something we already knew when releasing the update.
There’s a problem with Ilga’s branch. The mere fact that Forlan’s staying at her house is an enormous sea of possible different small events. The problem is that we can’t come up with anything. We can write dialogues but we’re still unsure about how we’re going to approach the question of making small, interesting events. There are dozens of cliché situations we could borrow from similar games. We did that in the past and most likely will continue to do so, even though I’d rather not to. You know, a girl falls, and you can see her panties or she’s cleaning the house… someone might think of ToML reading this. I’m sick of these clichés even though they work like a clock. Which is a pity…
Back to development news. I made around 370 renders. That is roughly 10 small events. Two of them are alternative branches. One event with Fuhrim and one with the Vampires. Now we need an alternative branch for Sarah.
I bet that someone’s reading this and thinking: «Why do we need these alternative branches, it’s expensive to make and only a small fraction of people will actually see it». Recently we had a review where a person said that the game’s bad due to lack of alternative branches. And it is always like that.
Anyway, we’re trying to come to some sort of balance in this question. Even though we make rather big events and making two alternative branches for it is basically the same as making two different games, we’re looking for ways to optimize things; alternative branches usually aren’t that big and we try to use old renders as much as possible. This simplifies things a lot and still, it gives our game an RPG vibe to it.
Overall, the comments are a separate issue. I answer to some of them from time to time but not because I feel offended by them, but because every comment is potentially speaking for some part of our player base. 9 players will remain silent and only 1 will say what he thinks. In other words, by answering to that one person we answer the other nine players too. And some of them may even hear us. The best defense is offense. So don’t tell us that we should just ignore those comments, no, we should pay attention to them! Otherwise, they might group and form a coalition:)
I generally love going against the tide. This adds some «spiciness» to your life. People say stuff like: «We’re going to bomb review your game and you’ll go broke». And I’m like: «We’ll see». This is a rather unique approach but keep in mind that we’re doing creative work here and creative people tend to be weird, at least a little. Take Pushkin for example, he’s participated in dozens of duels but never fired a shot. Of course, it didn’t end well for him but it’s a nice way to shake things up sometimes.
Anyway, let’s get back to development news.
The team is currently focused on mini events. I rendered a few events that take place in the apothecary, now I’ll be working on the armoury. We got rid of the option to take a stroll around the town (useless clicking no one really needs), but we’re thinking about adding small events that happen when you enter this or that location. The best place for that would be an inn. Then again, we aren’t that great at writing small events. I’m sure there are people out there who think that coming up with ideas for an event is easy. Especially when the game’s close to 300k of words in it and you’re trying not to repeat yourself. Well, go ahead. You can become a perfect game developer. We’re not perfect and sometimes we have difficulties.
I also want to close one topic once and for all. You can keep cracking jokes about this one for it’s amusing but I can’t keep trolling my fan base forever. It’s just not a nice thing to do.
A nun will get a big branch. Moreover:
a) She will take part in the main event of the final build of the game.
b) There’ll be the longest and most expensive animation for us to date with her in it.
c) It’s not what you want and expect from us. Some will like it (what’s most important is that we like it a lot). I hoped to add this scene into the early access build, but we just didn’t have enough time.
About release dates. Sadly, I can’t give you any information since there’s still so much to do. Besides, the current hectic state of things isn’t helping either. I mean, I’m doing my part of work but only to the point where I’m kind of satisfied with myself. I can do better but I just don’t feel like it yet. Maybe some inspiration will come later.
Recently I’ve seen a review. «Why is it taking so long? It’s not that hard, you just wanna make more money».
Alright, first things first.
Yes, we want to make money. That’s why we work. If it weren’t for money we get, no developer in his sane mind would want to deal with all this shit that every game developer faces at some point. The job’s nice but it’s routine, and it also involves dealing with a lot of idiots. (it’s yet another reason why I make this post available for everyone, so that I can talk about this publicly). Unlike me, most developers have to smile at those idiots to earn an extra hundred (or maybe even more) dollars.
The question of whether it’s easy to make games is rather controversial. In general, games are hard to make. Maybe someone’ll be surprised to read this but yeah, it takes a lot of time and effort to make a game, no matter the genre. If someone thinks otherwise, well, you can always try making your own game. I know one person who changed his mind about making games approximately after 2 months, and now he only helps making them. 😊

Наконец то я сел и решился написать новость конкретно на патреон. Наверно поэтому сделаю её публичной, да и вообще такое себе поощрение, возможность почитать бред старого параноика.
Мыслей много, по разработке есть что рассказать, а вот сесть и написать никак не мог. Кто следит за ситуацией, у нас в Стиме небольшая заруба с аудиторией случилась. И такая злость разбирает, которую не хотелось тащить сюда. Все же здесь в основном люди, которые хорошо относятся к нашему творчеству. И несколько раз я писал, перечитывал и решал, что не стоит публиковать.
И сразу говорю, нет нужды нас морально поддерживать, все нормально, все под контролем. Денег мы заработали, даже больше, чем я рассчитывал с учетом ситуации. Это главная цель.
Фидбека мало. При чем под фидбеком я понимаю конкретные вещи. Понятно баланс. И здесь мы получили – 0. Нужно развивать дом Ильги, где сейчас находится главный герой, нужны мелкие эвенты. Но это мы и без фидбека знали.
Вообще с Ильгой проблема. Тот факт, что герой теперь ночует у неё, это огромное непаханое поле для разнообразных ситуаций. Проблема в том, что мы не можем их придумать. С диалогами у нас проблем нет, а вот что делать на поприще интересных ситуаций, мы пока не решили. И есть десятки готовых штампов из игр нашего класса которые можно использовать. И мы ранее использовали такое и будем использовать и впредь скорее всего, но очень не хочется. Как большинство игр, начинается с того, что девушка упала и оголила трусики или же прибирается… кто-то вспомнит ToML. Тошнит уже от таких ходов, хоть они и работают. К сожалению...
По разработке. Сделал я примерно 370 артов. Это 10 небольших эвентов. Два из них — это альтернативные варианты прохождения. Эвент с Хельгримом, эвент с Вампирками. И еще нужна альтернативная ветка для Эстрид.
И 100% кто-то подумает и скажет: «Зачем альтернативы, это долго, дорого и человек увидит лишь часть контента». А недавно мы получили рецензию, игра плохая, потому что нет альтернатив. И так всегда.
Мы же, стремимся в этом вопросе к балансу. При том, что эвенты нас большие и делать два варианта прохождения, равноценно тому, чтобы делать две игры, мы создаем альтернативы, лишь на небольших участках и стремимся максимально задействовать уже готовый арт. Это сильно упрощает работу, с другой стороны, более приближает нас к РПГ.
Вообще, комментарии – это отдельная тема. Я их периодически касаюсь, не потому что меня это задевает, а потому что это потенциальные мысли части игровой аудитории. Только 9 промолчат, а 1 выскажется. Так вот, мы ответом, этому одному, отвечаем и тем девятерым. И кто-то из них, даже услышит. Лучшая защита, это нападение. Поэтому не нужно говорить – не обращай внимание, нет на них нужно обращать внимание! Ибо они могут собраться вместе и образовать коалицию:)
Вообще я очень люблю идти против любой системы. Это добавляет некоторую «перчинку» в жизнь. Мне говорят: «мы ваш рейтинг опустим, и вы разоритесь». Я: «а посмотрим». Своеобразный подход, но не забывайте, у нас творческая работа, а у творческих людей свои причуды. Пушкин вон, в десятке дуэлей учувствовал, а сам никогда не стрелял. Кончилось правда вроде не очень, но это тоже способ побороть хандру.
Вернемся к разработке.
Основная работа сейчас ведется над мини эвентами. Сейчас я заполнил ситуации для магазина, потом буду заполнять для оружейника. Прогулку упразднили за ненадобностью (ну зачем вам лишние клики), но можно добавить случайные события при входе на локацию. Хорошее поле для деятельности – трактир. Опять же, на мелкие эвенты наша фантазия работает плохо. Я уверен, что есть люди, которые считают, что придумать что-то легко. Особенно когда игра уже к 300 тысячам приближается, и нужно стараться не повторяться. Ну так в путь. Вы можете стать гениальным разработчиком. Мы не гениальны, и местами «буксуем».
Так же, чтобы раз и навсегда закрыть вопрос. Нет, писать можно, меня это забавляет даже, но все же нельзя бесконечно троллить свою аудиторию. Это неверно некрасиво.
Монашка получит большую историю. Более того:
а) Она участвует в главном эвенте релизной версии.
б) С её участием, будет самая дорогая и самая длинная анимация в игре.
в) Это не то, чего вы требуете и ждете. Кому-то это понравится (и главное это очень нравится нам). Я надеялся эту сцену добавить для раннего доступа, но мы бы объективно не успели.
По датам. Вообще никаких данных, работы еще очень много. К тому же текущая напряженность, не сильно способствует творчеству. Нет, я делаю свою работу, но ровно на столько, чтобы я был собой относительно доволен. А могу лучше, но пока не хочется. Может позже появится вдохновение.
Так же недавно видел рецензию. «Почему так долго, да что там делать, вы что просто бабла хотите срубить».
Начну с главного.
Да мы хотим срубить бабла. Ради этого и работаем. Если бы не было тех денег, которые мы получаем, терпеть то говно, с которым неизбежно сталкивается любой разработчик, никто бы не стал. Работа классная, но крайне рутинная, и связана с идиотами, в больших количествах. (еще одна причина, по которой я открыл пост, хочу, чтобы было видно, как я раскрыл данный секрет полишинеля). Многим, в отличии от меня еще и приходится этим идиотам улыбаться, ведь можно заработать лишнюю сотенку (а то и не сотенку) баксов.
Вопрос, что там сложного, весьма дискуссионный. На деле игры – это сложно. Возможно кто-то удивиться этому факту, но любые игры делать в целом это сложно. Кто хочет опровергнуть, может дерзнуть. Я знаю один такой пример, который передумал, примерно на второй месяц, и теперь только помогает делать игры😊

I agree with your point. A lot of people seem to confuse feedback with their personal opinion. We've got three testers and sometimes their opinions are completely different from each other. Reviews are also important. They're like light that shine for us in the darkness during development. More often than not, it shines from different directions yet we can choose to follow only one.

I do want to mention to be careful when listening to fan suggestions as they can be rather destructive as they have no experience making a game or creating a story. Some fans might say "I want more sex scenes, i dont care about the story". That's an example of something that should be ignored. This game is a visual novel after all and a story gives the game identity and purpose. Though don't confuse this with feedback. Feedback is great, as it gives a persons perspective. You can do anything with feedback. For me, I think its best for the developers to create a game on their vison of what their game will look like and stick with their vision and not get distracted along the way. (Voids Calling Ep.1 is an excellent game). Its like saying to yourself, I will make myself pasta and I'm going to add tomato sauce and cheese but while you are making it, a person says to you, you should only add tuna, no tomato and cheese and you just add tuna. Once you start eating you are not happy and don't like the taste of tuna in pasta, you should have just added tomato and cheese because you know you would have liked it.
