"The iron stench of its blood mixed with the spore-filled must of the fields" It previously said that goblin blood smells like copper.

EsZeus

Yeah, you are right. But at the same time he also knows about his dynasty and how everybody tried to get their hands on their legacy skills. That's what he knows about, too. But yes, he is young. So its right. And the latest chapters somehow showed exactly why the author did it this way, too. For me it's a clear show of an author who forces the MC in a specific direction so later something specific can happen :)

Egor

I know I'm late to the party but taking the information he has available currently you are right he absolutely knows something happened to stop his father from coming... But why would he assume it's still a threat to him... He seems oblivious to the danger his name and skills grant him other than to not televise it... He is young so his naivety there can be forgiven All he KNOWS is a lot of bandits attacked his father and prevented him from following, Also that his father has no functioning skills. He could be forgiven for thinking that, yes a bandit possibly killed him, or that the bandits got a lucky hit in that maybe took a leg, or just critically hurt him since he has no healing or adaptation skills anymore. Combine that with his naivety that they were "just bandits" then it's understandable that he assumes the danger has passed. Bandits, I'm guessing, don't usually hang around for a year after a robbery. Due to his father not telling him the danger, He's just a kid trying to get to his dad to help him recover which I think I'd very understandable.

EsZeus

But, he KNEW. Becauss over multiple chapters he knew that something must prevent his father from searching him. He said so himself. Multiple times. It's clear that something happened for his father. And he already thought about the worst possible things that could be. So, you are sadly not right with that.

Takehiko0

Well he doesnt know that his father couldnt fight against them

Robin Richards

If he leaves the depths he's not re-entering before he gains a class. So, he misses any unclassed related honors at least one of which he has a solid theory on how to get, and given his latest skill should be relatively easy. The world is offering him power and he's ignoring it. Sure, he's doing it for good character reasons, but my inner munchkin really wants him to go get the power

CheeseGrater

It's not like they cannot go back into the depths after leaving. The only reason to get the honors now is to make sure they beat the boss. All the other honors are still on the table. It might even be more efficient to go for the boss, allowing them to get a major honor and be able to walk through the debts faster

Tommy

Wait I thought the system saw the duo as one entity when awarding stuff? Shouldn’t this honour apply to Porky too? TFTC

yohan gu

A good way to put it! I also think this is a good take on intelligence as a stat. Straightforward, not coming up with bizarre theories on what intelligence is and resilient to high scaling.

Bacon Macleod

yeah int is more processing speed, like an idiot with 1000 int is just gonna be good at coming to a dumb decision really fast

yohan gu

I'm happy Kaius explains his motivation for wanting to rush the guardian. It is of course a silly one, but one can buy it from a lonely teen that may have a lot of muscle and competence in some fields but is ultimately lost without the only person he spent any significant amount of time with, that directed his whole life before their forced separation. Also, the proof that 56 points in intelligence and wisdom don't make someone reasonable.

yohan gu

Thanks for the recap, it is useful to not have to dig into previous chapter and remember upgrades to know the current stats.

Dash Marley

Except that they were still in the area when Porkchop came through

EsZeus

But it's also dumb to go out and search for his father instead of first getting his class. If his father couldn't fight against them, then he can't do jackshit without even a class. His logic is highly flawed. :(

Randall

I hope they wait long enough for porkchop to get the honor too

Robin Richards

I understand why he wants to leave, but it does irk me that he's going to leave power on the table. In the long run a couple of comparatively minor Honors for example for soloing 9 Champions while unclassed is probably not the biggest upgrade compared to classing up etc. but it is power he could get and this latest honor makes it easier. Although to be honest we're all assuming, including Kaius and Porkchop that they'll beat it on the first attempt. If they have to run because they can't beat it then 6-9 Months wondering the Depths trying to find honors before they try one again might happen...

Bacon Macleod

thanks for the catch, can get a little lost in the hyperfocus sauce when writing and sometimes the brain moves faster than the fingers.

The Human

I was thinking that too. Maybe it's just that it'll let porkchop get the bonus for being first as well? Should it apply retroactively, if so?

WickedlyDesigned

Could be, but if this is the case then he should get the first achievement as well - being considered a single person when advantageous should apply.

WickedlyDesigned

A thought for the debate on hunting more champions: according to chapter 7, individual rooms can reset in biomes, it just takes time while they are empty ("Plus, while individual rooms and regions did reset in a biome, it often took weeks or even months of no human presence at this shallow of a layer to happen.") As they haven't been to the first biome in ages, it should have reset since then. That means 3 champions in the grove, along with the natural treasure fruit that could be speedrun in a short few weeks. Add in the new champion sense, and getting another 3 champions shouldn't be a that much of a chore. And I remember the original description of the large building sized ogre. Getting all the advantages should be a priority.

seth dauer

I hear this. I'm just basing it on his surety that his dad would find him. And they would have a classed tracker

seth dauer

Could be only from the point of the skill's formation perspective. So they are getting double the time in and porkchop is only a week or so in coming?

Doubledoor

You have to remember that Kaius entered the Dungeon after falling down a waterfall and nearly drowning. There is no reason for them to suspect that he is even alive, nevermind that he is in the Dungeon trying to get out.

seth dauer

Nice job on clarifying so clearly his motivations to "rush" the boss. It's certainly *a* correct decision. Especially the finding out what happened before it's too late. I'm just not sure if the consideration of the groups size and power as well as their likely purpose has been considered. His dynasty skills. Basic bandits aren't going to stop his dad. Tyranny of stats, what if they are waiting. It *has* been a year and everyone *knows* that unclassed will die. So maybe they aren't. Extra thought. Just because he leaves now, doesn't mean he can't return before he gets his class

WickedlyDesigned

Well, the Honour does not compute: the evolved bond says "Experience, achievements, and feats are shared equally between both parties. When favourable, both parties are treated as a single entity in the eyes of the system." An Honour is a type of feat, so the fact that it doesn't automatically apply for Porkchop goes right against the wording of the skill.

Pisces the Nose

And finding his father will surely not be a task he can immediately tackle or get started on upon leaving, even if he doesn't know about Stage 2 of the Integration. That quote about sharpening the axe not delaying the cutting from a previous commenter still feels very apt.

Dominic French

Well there is always the possible apocalypse to grind honours after he gets out

seth dauer

His frustration at an uncaring world that would Unfinished thought?

Ihsan Gunay

Officially above double normal stat limits!

Ihsan Gunay

Endurance - 30 + 21 ~ 51 Vitality - 20 + 21 ~ 41 Strength - 20 + 21 ~ 41 Dexterity - 20 + 21 ~ 41 Intelligence - 20 + 36 ~ 56 Willpower: - 20 + 36 ~ 56

Dominic French

Dang the loss of gains hurts but his dad is family and I understand not being able to ignore that kind of frustration about knowing if he's alive or not. Besides, based on what we the readers know once he gets out an apocalypse sounds like it might present more challenges than this place does.

Pisces the Nose

I get Kaius' reasoning on not going for the next Champion slaying Honour but it feels wrong for him to now be assuming the Guardian fight just will be a win when the Champion fights were still hard. Additionally, he and Porkchop found and killed nine champions while weaker and without such a convenient ability, so it is far more sure that they'd be able to find six in much less than a year, since there will be no pauses for training. Another way of looking at it is that they'd have to go through two more biomes and clear 75% of the Champions, when they've already cleared all but one Champion in 3 biomes, while weaker.
