Maybe they were the ones that toppled the Empire

Philip Cadzow

I thought as much too

I'm not sure if I buy into that. There should have been a long time after the integration for full legacies to appear. And if the first people to discover that had info to speed up the progress that info should've been passed down.

UnhandMe

I'm calling it now, Kaius' family/clan were the ones to discover legacies. Would be such a good plot point if set up well, doesn't make any sense to not tap into that.

Gotta love email notifications lol

If Kaius cocks something up, I do generally try to address it--it might not happen immediately though. A lot of what Kaius is *slowly* trying to do is culturally alien to him and everyone around him-things that seem obvious either may not occur to him, or may be evaluated as being far higher risk than we would

gray matter

I’m getting genuinely worried he’s not going to leave Reiker a note on Aspects. He was so livid at the other person for betraying humanity, but his hubris is about to leave him open to the same potential mistake. Maybe the first legacy person was also just trying to help out his current friends then they all got killed. I know he’s not going to fall into the same spot because then the book series would be over, but I hope he does something. Ianmus and Porkchop have had the knowledge for awhile now, and waiting for Jekkar isn’t worth the possibility of failure even if you never want to consider failing and dying yourself

Dax

Also something to consider, while Kaius is a product of his environment - secrecy rampant, and the already-strong crushing potential rivals while they are still weak - the first person to discover skill combination was not in that environment. It didn't yet exist, as all they had before then were simple base skills.

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

You are exactly right, specific context in his raising/thought process development. Kaius is a very well written example of a flawed protagonist. Agree 100 percent using your own words. Here are Kaius' own words "After that though…he would spread this. He had to. Even if he hadn’t agreed to help the guild, it was far too valuable to society as a whole—and if they did it right it would be difficult to trace back to them." I just hope he would make contingencies as he doesn't know he has plot armor.

Thomas V.

Kaius is a product of his environment, and he grew up in an incredibly specific context - one that could be considered limited if not lacking, depending on your point of view. He is an exceptionally well written example of a flawed protagonist in my eyes.

Mousehowl

Finding Kaius to be pretty shitty individual to complain about the legacies being kept secret and then hoarding the information himself for fear he'll miss out on advantages. While at the same time taking everything he possibly can from the guild.

Shinatobe

Second this, I actually think it was mentioned as a possibility that the first person died before telling about legacy skills. It seems weird that Kaius would know that and not leave a contingency in case they also were to die and leave everyone in the dark about aspects.

Knyko

Yea i think logic dictates he should.

Nate maresch

Will Kaius leave behind a sealed document regarding aspects and such? What if they did perish before he was willing to share his headstart. Just can't get the thought out of my head maybe the first legacy skill person died and wasn't completely a greedy jerk.
