On the subject of Owning your weird:- We home educated our kids; often when we tell new acquaintances or even old friends that we were doing this they could look very uncomfortable and suddenly not seem to know what to say to us so we began to respond by leaning forward, slightly confidentially, and say " It's ok we know it's weird." This often broke the tension and meant we could continue with a normal conversation.
