An interesting topic that this program touches on is how did China achieve the shape and territory we see on the world map today? Highly informative study of the Japanese descent into militarism

This episode was simply amazing. I started listening on my day off (today) while hiking and kept listening to the end - through driving, showering, eating, doing laundry, cleaning my office, uploading photos taken while hiking, and finally just sitting engrossed. Now, I have to wait for part 2? I didn't even know I wanted to know all this.

Another book recommendation. The Rising Sun by John Toland is really good. It gives more a high level view from the February 26th Incident to just after the war. The Knights of Bushido by Lord Russel of Liverpool (I wish I had a name as cool as that) is a good accounting, if rather outdated, of Japanese war crimes.

Excited to hear this one! For those interested in this period of time in Japan, I can recommend one of my favourite movies (it is also a book) called "In This Corner of the World." It's about a Japanese family, and one girl in particular, who live in Kure, Japan in the build-up to, and throughout, the war. It's beautifully made, and gives a good insight into the attitudes of people in Japan at that time, etc.
