Hardcore History EP 69 Twilight of the Aesir
🕑 Added 2023-01-16 20:48:16 +0000 UTCThis show picks up where Dan's Thor's Angels show left off. In the early Middle Ages Pagan Germanic-language speakers like the Vikings are a dying breed. Many of their contemporaries wish they'd die faster.

Where can you find Thors angels?
Bill Rutherford
If you buy the episode from Dan's website, I think you're given a private podcast feed URL you can use to listen to it anywhere (or download the audio file)

Loved it, and it gave me an excuse to listen to Thor's Angels again!

Thanks, Dan! As always, outstanding. Part 2 will be out next week, yes? 😁

Even tradition isn't really a good argument in this case, because Ukraine wasn't a Russian colony for hundreds of years before it became one, which is exactly the point of my comment (Kyivan Rus' is a predecessor state to at least three countries, not only to Russia). To this extent, a more precise analogy would be the relationship between Ireland and England.
Gene
Unfortunately you're correct about propaganda, but that's only because people still believe a country's sovereignty is based on tradition instead of its current ideals, culture, and guiding philosophy. That would be equivalent of saying "America is actually British because historically it was owned by Britain" :P

"but I'm geeking out right now, and you're stuck with me." We've been stuck with you for a long time now, Dan. Keep on Geeking.

Thanks, it's an amazing episode, as always! ...but one would hope that now, during the war in Ukraine, and with Russian propaganda actively using the history of Kyivan Rus', you would be a bit more careful when talking about this period. From this episode it would seem like Kyivan Rus' is basically Russia, the episode is full of mentions of Russia, and there's almost no mention of Ukraine (or Belarus for that matter). Of course, I understand that this isn't done intentionally, and objectively, none of these two countries even existed back then... Yet the problem is, this omission of Ukraine from the world history books is exactly the thing that Russian propaganda is currently using to convince everybody that their country is an ancient one, and that Ukrainians are made up people invented during the USSR times, which in their mind justifies the invasion.

Where can I find this one’s predecessor, Thors Angels, in a podcast or easily controllable format? Apple Music makes it difficult to rewind/skip ahead.

No matter how long it takes, I'll always be happy for another episode. Thanks, Dan.
Jason Lawhorn doesn't have a creative screen name
The amount of reading done to create this alone is mindboggling. I'll buy that for a dollar.

Thanks Ben & Dan! Thor's Angels became one of my favorites episodes over the years, so I'm tickled pink!

This is Hardcore History at its best — I learned about a period of history I knew little about beforehand, and I was hanging on every word. Excellent work, Dan! Your best one in awhile.

Thors angels was one of my favorites, particularly King Clevis the bikey leader! So glad to have some more long-form content from Dan!

When was Thor’s Angels? I can’t remember that one and my brain won’t let me listen to the 2nd part without already hearing the 1st part
