Thanks for the advise. I'd keep it in mind next time

My comments about Mei aren't about making her perfect. Even if my advice had happened for her character, she wouldn't be perfect, she'd just be tolerable. It's about her character at least not feeling like she was shoehorned in with a blatantly obvious goal. Which unfortunately she is. Everyone knows she was thrown in to be the love interest, as it was too obvious. And the large amounts of detail given on her were given in an attempt to make people would quickly accept her. This was also too obvious. An author's hand should be subtle, not blatant.

Are you kidding? 😆 I am a fanfiction author who is dreaming to write an original novel one day. I am working hard to improve and would literally gobble up any critisim and a chance to improve if it's reasonable. I know I can barely be considered a writer with my current skills but I get better with each book I write. I am just glad you like my story enough to take your time to comment and express your opinions instead of just going 'meh, it's not fun anymore. Dropped'

Emmanuel_Capricorn

And please do comment more often. It's too quiet. You doubts and critizmes are much appreciated. It gives me how you readers feel and allows me to adjust and tell the story just the way I want. What I write cannot always be what have in mind so it's really helpful.

I understand where you are coming from but you should also remember that I am not trying to make her a perfect likable character either. Her being a pushover and not fighting back was explained as the Emperoe is the closest she has to a father and manipulated since birth. She honestly doesn't even care, doesn't even really has desire. Which would be changed after meeting Tai Lung. It could make for an interesting interaction how such spinless dreamless and almost robotic female character deals with someone with Tai Lung whonis the polar extreme opposite with the tallest ambition and dream. She could learn a thing or two and maybe find a reason to finally care and stand against the king instead of just making her not pushover just for the sake of it. Do you get where I am coming from?

N

Yeah she does. And aside from the copious details about her tragic backstory, it's also because she makes no effort to fight it or appear even slightly defiant about it. Just quietly accepting everything with no word of complaint. Maybe it makes logical sense for her not to defy someone as powerful as the emperor. However, it still needs to happen in some form or another or she comes off as a complete pushover. Even something as small as her giving the emperor a bit of snark would've helped.

Nicolae

that's going to back fire...

Thanks for the advise! And did she really come off as pitiful? I was more kneen on showing the manipulative Emperor. I don't really like damsel in distress pitiful girl cliche either so sorry it comes off that way.

If you want readers to like a new character, what you shouldn't do is constantly give info dumps on them. "Show don't tell" is a saying for a reason. A lot of info is just thrown at us about how sad and pitiful Mei's situation is. You can't be too obvious people should make their own decisions without feeling like the author is trying to make it for them.
