I have a degree in criminology so I would have hoped that Kamala Harris was at least enlightened in that field. She is not. She is part of the problem. When you work for the system that wants to cattle drive more people into the correctional system, I have to question her motives and assume she is being paid off by the private prison industry and pro-Drug War interests. She also seems to speak broadly about crime. The thing about crime is that it, like anything else, is varied and nuanced. There are different reasons that can lead to white collar crime versus index 1 crimes. Even deeper into index 1 crimes, the reasons that lead people to murder is different than what leads people to steal. You have to have a solid theory that applies to a specific range of crimes and cook up a method to cut down on that crime or type of crime, and see what happens then. The education thing is tied to a more complex theory which boils down to more education, social connections, etc. -> more social capital -> more to lose by being a criminal -> less reason to commit crime. Its a fairly solid theory but it does not solve all crime. Nothing can and nothing will.

I think it's pretty obvious why the media's pushing up Kamala and being nice to AOC. A woman of color has absolutely no chance in hell being the U.S. president in this election cycle nor probably even within the next couple decades. The republican heads of these media outlets want people to get riled up for unwinnable candidates to muddy the waters and make it that much harder to congregate votes for Bernie. $hillary only got as many votes as she did because 1. she cheated to win against Bernie and 2. Truancy is something that could indicate real problems for a kid - not just 'criminals of the future' but it could be a sign of parental neglect, bullying, mental health issues, abuse etc etc etc. There should be very rapid and specialised care for kids who show that kind of red flag, how the fuck does fines and jail time help that?
