This may not be related but I was a dog trainer for 4 years and we had a puppy come in whose mother had been shot 2 times while she was pregnant. The puppy was the only surviving one and grew to be extremely aggressive and behaved out of place to the point that he would bite himself hard if he saw his own tail wag and bite anyone who came close no matter what. Eventually we had to give him to a trainer full time as no person un-equipped could ever manage him. And we tried everything for 3 years. Maybe issues in the womb have more effect than we could ever know.

You guys didnt really touch on his relationship with his parents growing up much, or what his homelife was like. Mentioned briefly what his mother got up to. I consider this to be quite crucial as I am a fan of Alice Miller's poisonous pedagogy theory as one possible explanation for evil behaviour.

Cool episode. Serial killers are quite fascinating to learn about. A cool idea for future episodes in that vein could be covering a spattering of famous unsolved murders with a little healthy speculation about what happened.

I have to say Paul it rang bells back to my childhood too. Parents split at 5, fought all the way till I was about 16, turbulent household and picked on at school tonnes. In high scchool my best friend claimed I was going to shoot up the school from how bad I was getting treated that I got called in and questioned regarding it. Obviously I didn’t or I would likely be locked up. Did I ever wish ill on those who wronged me? Nearly every day. It scares the hell out of me, that dark side. Twice I snapped and retalitated as a younger kid, but I learned to have control over my more violent desires. What could I have become had I not restrained? I feel our best chance going forward has always be study and research, and it is in a twisted way sad that we can’t test for these bad upbringing in a lab honesty. Ethics won’t allow it, but it’s a safe bet that you can see these things developing. Information is our best defence.
