Magic has a modifier. For wizards it's the intelligence bonus plus their proficiency bonus. Oh and the stat the defender roll against for spells that have reflex rolls is 8 + your magic modifier + spell caster level. If they're a cleric the modifier is their wisdom bonus + their proficiency bonus because their magic stat uses wisdom instead of intelligence. If magic was flat rolls magic would be worthless, because as the game goes on and the enemies get stronger, their ac goes up. That would mean you'd miss way more. Oh and if the enemy has an ac above 20 the only way to hit them without a modifier is if you land a 20. To balance magic some spells have concentration, which means you can't cast other spells if you want to keep that spell in affect.

I love the story arcs all around. Spoilers. Thrane, who began the story with finding his courage during his first true fight to the death, is fittingly killed in combat himself. He died as he lived, the way I'm sure he would've wanted. Thulsa the betrayer gets his comeuppance curtesy of the man he tried to deceive into an alliance. Gimleck was truly a fool to believe any force on Earth can kill Blovius. The sneaky Tiefling gets the ultimate power at the end.

Spoilers, and fan theories: Thrane is currently in a Northman afterlife, where only the most honorable warriors go. And his family, after learning of his adventure was proud of the man he became. It's not known of what ultimately came of Blovius Thraft, But his journal was found by a group of historians, his journal told the tale of the adventure. But one thing is for shure, the story of these 4 travelers will be remembered in song, and in campfire stories for generations to come.
