If you want to read about a real failure of the civil war, you should have picked George McClellan, he was such a 'second guesser' he managed to be held at bay and defeated by an army a fraction of his size and be removed from command for it.

It is incredibly dumb to criticise Stonewall Jackson for being 'Audacious', leading from the front, gambling. Thats what made him the outstanding commander he was, that gamble and that risk comes with the territory. Without that he would be a standard lame commander who wouldnt have had the victories he had. He wasnt a failure because he risked, he lived on in history as one of the greatest military commanders in history because he risked, that is not a failure. The same applies to R.E.Lee; despite being much maligned now for being the slave loving cucklord he was, he was maybe the greatest leader in American history, rivaling people like Julius Caesar BECAUSE HE WAS AUDACIOUS, BECAUSE HE TOOK RISKS and won.

You multiply themtogether if you require ALL OF THE EVENTS TO HAPPEN IN ORDER, for example: What is the chance I roll a 6 then a 2 then a 4 on a dice in that order? 1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6 = 1/216

I see your point re thinderfoot but he's going after stuff generally that breaks the laws of thermodynamics. These aren't things that are stepping stones to success, but things the very laws of physics forbid ever working, or working better or even as well than an already existing solution, with an inmutable law of nature forbidding them getting any better or doing what is represented in kickstarter videos. I feel there's an argument that these are the guys damaging innovation because they are pipedreams that sound better than practical solutions would sound and they eat up money from grants and media attention etc despite being impossible to implement. So i feel there's a big difference there between them and the wright bros who were doing something we knew was possible (from birds) and there was nothing in physics we already knew making it a non starter
