The original Zelda came out on the Japanese Famicom Disk System years before the NES. I don't think there was a Japanese equivalent to Nintendo Power. Miyamoto has said that the game was made cryptic to encourage a community discussing all of the discoveries and secrets organically.

I'll grant you that it's not the sort of high functioning analytical challenge of a complex city builder or strategy game but to assert that fighting games are just totally mindless is pretty disingenuous. Anybody who has played more than a couple hours of one against their limited circle of friends can tell you that if you go into most fights just blindly mashing buttons with no regard for what your opponent is doing and how to best counter it; you'll get your ass kicked and then thoroughly laughed at.

Dark tones, eccentric characters, dungeon puzzles, fox quizzes, 4x the instruments, Super Saiyan Link, constantly monitoring a doom clock, obsessively collecting every single mask--there's just too many great things to mention.

@TJ I would definitely recommend you play Grandia II. It's only $20 on steam and it's well worth the money. It's a classic RPG with an amazing story, hot demon girls, and an extremely relatable main character. It has such an amazing story too, and it's battle system is top notch, all about strategy. It's my favorite game of all time, to be honest.

It never makes any lists, but if you can give Shadow Hearts Covenant a whirl. Rasputin as a kick ass villain and he has a dominatrix side kick. Plus your main party has a wolf in it, and if you keep subtitles on you get to see into his mind.

I Bought Diablo 2 a couple of years ago at a swapmeet but never got around to playing it. after watching this episode of DFF I finally decided to give it a shot and I am currently just past the part where you freed that old dude Deckard Cain and what I have learned from my experience of playing, is that TJ is completely right and the game is just clicking.

Mega Man 3 is above Ocarina of Time? Huh????? Ocarina of Time (even if it isn’t your favorite Zelda Game) changed everything for the gaming industry. And unlike MARIO 64, it holds up very well & it’s 3DS Remake is still my favorite 3D Zelda. Mega Man was a great series on the NES. And I will concede that it’s probably the best Non-MARIO Series on the NES. But if you compare the two, Ocarina of Time is just far more impactful.
