To clarify, the gun was never loaded with live rounds. It was loaded with jerry-rigged dummy cartridges that had had their gunpowder removed since they were running low on time and didn't want to have to wait for professionally made ones to be delivered. However, the prop guys who were unloading the powder didn't realize that the percussion primer (the small bit of gunpowder contained in the back of the round that triggers the rest of the powder) was still left. At some point during production, the gun with one of those dummy rounds was fired, resulting in the bullet being propelled partially down the barrel before it got stuck. When the gun was later loaded with blanks which contain only gunpowder, the exploding powder acted along with the stuck bullet in a way similar to as if a live round were actually loaded into the gun.
