I teach Philosophy at a Big State school. What Paul is saying about the education and arts in this country is entirely correct. It is very difficult for my students to think creatively and to write their own opinions. Instead of trying to formulate their own ideas and opinions about a text, they simply want to translate the text into twitter/cliff notes version of the text. They also tend to lack very obvious cultural references in literature and even film that is not a mass-produced commercial work that has came out in the past 10 years. You are absolutely correct that we can't have art without the artist, and it is a damn shame that we only teach art history of what will appear on a standardized test instead of actually doing or appreciating art beyond some simple fact about it. Also, unless you assign a student less than 10 pages, they ain't gonna read it. Reading is dead, art is dead, poetry is most certainly dead, theater is dead. George Carlin was right, "sooner or later all you will need to get into college is a pen and paper, get the hell into algebra class". And I don't think this is the students' fault. It is a lack of care from the adults and a lack of funding for our children's future. We would rather make drones who can follow what the admins tell us than people who will change the way that work is done. Creativity has been substituted for the ability to follow directions.

I think expectations are the foundation of disappointment. Sounds like all these "revelations" about Ellen, came from a bunch of naïve, mediocre people, who childishly expected their ***boss*** to be anything like Ellen's on-screen persona. Like anyfuckingbody becomes a boss to dance with their workers, and expand their kith and kin. Ellen doesn't have to love these people, or even act like their friends. Honestly, if I hired someone who turned out to expect that, I would cherish firing their silly asses too.

Still, in schools you have access to role models who can directly guide and nurture your gifts. You might find artists you look up to online but the chance to directly interact with them and have them critique and offer advice on your own work isn't something readily available in most cases. Also schools tend to have access to instruments and art supplies the kids can use even if they're not necessarily from a family who could afford to provide them with equivalent equipment. And beyond all that I think that having arts in schools lends the arts much needed credibility as a way of life. Children derive their sense of what is important in life, at least in part, from their schooling. If the arts are completely absent from these institutions it's not much of a stretch of the imagination to envision generations of kids who think art is just a waste of time because it doesn't necessarily earn you a paycheck. So yeah I don't think schools not having arts programs would kill the arts as a whole, but I do think it is going to diminish the amount of truly profound artistic works we would have seen otherwise.

I disagree with the “ arts and youth” part. Kids today have so many more outlets to display their art forms and the art of their choosing. The amount of kids in entertainment industry is at a all time high and multiple streaming services just for kids programming. So maybe a lack of exposure in schools but the output of youth art isn’t dying.

Just some friend neighborhood citizen advice: Don't let some random power outage kill a good recording. $150 investment into a power supply backup battery can prevent that unknowable power outage shit. I run off a gaming laptop and have had the power go out several times even if for a few moments and it's nice that the laptop battery kicked in when the power went out in the middle of something. This would be like that for your desktops you guys I think all run on. Clearly the more shit plugged into it, would mean the less time you have before the battery is fully drained. Also, the 10 TB external hard drives good for archiving as I mentioned in a previous flash fried patreon post. It's not good to use it to directly record to. If any slight misconnection happened with the USB while recording to it will all be ruined. Although I think programs tend to temporarily store on the main hard drive then offload it to the external device, just don't record directly to that. To avoid that pain in the ass all together, searching for some temporary and maybe corrupted file on your computer. It's what you might get if ever recording directly to a USB device. Rather make sure you have enough space to record directly on your main drive, then later offload it to a portable hard drive and the internet.
