To be fair, they absolutely do not cover the Protist kingdom in high school. At least, they didn't when asses as old as mine, TJ's and Paul's were filling the seats. Though that being said, they'd be closest to plants anyway.

As a trained biologist I must contest with the algae is interchangeable with fungus. Algae and fungus are in two completely different domains, fungi are closer to us than to algae on the tree of life. Algae are photosynthetic, have cell walls, and they are about as close to bacteria evolutionarily.Fungi are much more complex and consume detrius/dead matter, the largest one of the oldest individual organisms alive is a fungi.
