Yo Paul , been getting into warhammer and miniatures myself, I play D&D with friends a lot as well. So to begin my journey of learning how to paint I started doing D&D minis which are way way cheaper. But it still gets your skills improved and it’s something you can use well before you have a 40k army finished.
