I watched the 1960 Time Machine movie a few years ago and it was mostly forgettable except for one epic scene where the protagonist figured out how stupid the Eloi were and reamed them out for it. I've got a physics degree and I can answer Paul's question. The edge of the visible universe isn't something you can physically touch. Since light has a speed limit, it takes light time to go a specific distance. The longer that distance the longer light takes to reach it. What this means is that if you look out into space, the further away you look the further back in time you're seeing. The "edge" of the universe is the distance that light can travel between the time the universe first became transparent to today. If you move the edge will move with you, always appearing the same distance away. You can think of it like holding a flashlight in a very dark room. You'll never be able to reach the "edge" of the light. As you walk holding the flashlight, the spot where no more of the light is shining moves with you and is always a constant distance away.

I know Mass Effect: Andromeda isn’t perfect and had some hilarious glitches; but ,when you guys were talking about light-speed travel I thought of that game and how it does a pretty good job of dealing with the fact that all one’s family in the Milky Way galaxy would be long dead.
