In the social sciences, cries for help are referred to as idioms of distress. People who can't necessarily verbalize what mental illness they are dealing with will often do things that let people know that something isn't right with them. This happens all over the world, and countries that are actually worth a shit often have ways of handling these warning signs that people give.
