Have you played the newer games? I've enjoyed the ones I've played, and they've definitely toned down her sex appeal and focused more on her being an Indiana Jonesette. It works for me.

Lara Croft does not work as anything besides a hyper-sexualized tough chick. I say this because I am a huge nerd who loves the mythology of any franchise I consume (like I could tell you the back story of every background character in Jabba’s palace, or talk for hours about residents of South Park or Springfield). I’ve played a few games, and I watched the Angelina Jolie movies, and just couldn’t give a shit about anything in the tomb raider universe or any of the characters. Everyone is vague, poorly developed, and just plain not interesting. In fact, pretty much everything I know about that franchise comes from various wikis I read, and not from the actual content. The only game that I found mildly interesting was “Legend”, and that’s specifically because of the constant radio banter with the black guy and the British guy, sort of a pre-Deep-Fat-Fried. Lara has a pretty specific niche, and it is of a hot busty chick with guns and a fun gameplay. That’s it. De-sexualizing her, or making her a complicated and layered character just doesn’t work. Call Nathan Drake for that.
