This is a related case to what they were talking about in the podcast—Sherman Sizemore was a 73-year-old Baptist minister who went in for surgery in 2006. The hospital gave him a drug to paralyze him but forgot to give the anesthetic to knock him out, so he was fully awake and felt everything during the first part of the surgery but couldn’t move or speak. Later, they gave him an amnesic drug and never told him what happened. Afterward, he started having severe panic attacks and paranoia, and sadly, he died by suicide two weeks later. His family sued the hospital and anesthesiologists, and the case was settled privately. It’s a heartbreaking example of anesthesia awareness and how traumatic it can be.
