I love your face every time August shows up... I can't stop laughing! The thing about making mean characters sympathetic, is that when you put "the jerk" in tough situations, in order to become sympathetic, they have to be humbled by the situation. August does the opposite... he leans farther into his superiority, continues to pass judgement on those he sees as lesser, while also using them to fuel his own issues and addictions. He remains judgmental, entitled, and dickish. In fact, he becomes even more so in a lot of ways. He can't become likeable just from having bad things happen, everyone has bad things. What matters is how he handles the bad things and he still sees everyone else as lesser and thinks he deserves more slack than anyone else based on who he is... like a dick. Haha.
