I never took it as "live up to your potential so we can all live off of you." So its odd to me that people keep bringing that up. Sure, that's how his father is and maybe he has a nagging part of his brain that says that's how the rest of his family will be too. But none of the kids are actually like that, and he should know that. Everything with Karen and the baby has him spiraling hard, so from that perspective I suppose his reaction makes sense. No rule book on how to react to stuff that happens in life.

I always thought he hesitated killing Frank because at the end of the day he's Ian;s dad and hurting him would ultimately hurt Ian which he doesn't want to do so in his mind it's easier to just go back to juvie to get away from his dad

I’m pretty sure Mickey is legitimately afraid his dad will kill him if he finds out, so he thinks he’s safer in jail.
