Gotta remember that even if he suspects it’s a basilisk, that the victims so far are not dying but being petrified. Don’t know if that kind of thing would be documented as it takes certain conditions for it to happen that way.

Harry is not an idiot. He needs to realize right away that the monster is a basilisk. He trained with Newt Scamander and if he wants to surpass him, he has to be faster.
