“Your dress rapier, Baron Aldrich,” said one of Count Grandhill’s knights after Mabel’s own mother finished dressing him. Alvin thought he recognized her as one of the knights who’d insisted on searching him every time he went to see Count Grandhill.
The blade they gave him was scarcely thicker down the middle than a fencing foil, and Alvin suspected cutting someone with it would be more like using a whip than a blade. It was light though, and fit comfortably by his side, as well as being short enough to comfortably sit down with it still by his side.
Despite the extremely modest size of the blade, the knight flinched as soon as Alvin accepted it, despite being in full armor and with a sword of her own at her hip. Alvin rolled his eyes at her antics and held out his arms.
“Put it on me, please.” Alvin pretended the request was simply to make her feel more comfortable, but in truth, he did not know how the elaborate belt system was supposed to fit him. Since he had a perfectly good knight here who seemed like she knew what she was doing, he might as well have her take care of it.
Soon enough, Alvin was suited up and dressed. Looking at himself in the pane of polished silver that served as his mirror, he realized he looked rather dashing. The clothes men wore in this world were far more colorful than the modern suits Alvin was used to. Staring back at himself, Alvin thought he looked rather handsome. The striking red robes, coupled with gold trim and buttons, made it look like he was wearing a military uniform rather than a wedding dress, but that made sense for a feudal lord known for his skill at arms.
The dress sword at his side had a pommel decorated with the image of a snarling beast, and a matching pattern ran up his left side. A small ribbon tied the blade to its scabbard, which Alvin was told was symbolic of how Alvin didn’t intend to draw blood until Mabel was pregnant. It made sense for a feudal culture where producing heirs was of vital importance.
“How do I look?”
“V-very dashing, Baron Aldrich...” the knight said, taking a step back as she spoke.

Alvin followed through with the ceremony, which happened just as planned. He stood at the altar, and Mabel arrived soon after, led by her father and handed off to him. The man overseeing the ceremony was a local official from Grandhill County, and Mabel’s family apparently knew him well. My arms are your arms, and your foes are my foes. Together, let us bring peace and prosperity to the land!”
All in all, it was a simple oath, but one the Count and Alvin had come up with together. But every word mattered. It was a message to the lords and barons gathered here. East Water was part of Grandhill County, and they would be uniting the entire area soon.
“I accept your oath and swear to do right by you, my new son!” Count Grandhill stepped onto the stage, and Alvin moved to shake his hand but was instead pulled into a tight embrace.
The message was clear. Despite their past differences, Baron Aldrich and Count Grandhill were family now. All it took was an oath of vassalage. When the last song ended and the first course cleared off, Count Grandhill stood back up.

So originally I had a very different and more eventful wedding planned, and we might still get that. But it would be horribly cruel to set off a major plot event and then tell you guys it would be months before the next chapter, so I replaced the rest of the chapter with extra sexytimes which will probably be removed or cut short in the final version of the book.
But for now, I think this is a good place to take a break without leaving things too unsatisfied. I have a lot of other stuff to write, and I think dedicating some brain power in the background. We have unfortunately hit my 85k word limit, so I don't want to commit to writing more of a novel I'm not going to publish, especially when stuff past this point is liable to be completely rewritten.

- The maid and the peasant rebellion that I kinda left up in the air for way too long.
I will hopefully do a few standalone chapters to tie up those things and cover the interesting scenes I was still looking forward to writing, especially the ones that will be the same in the final version. But for now consider this the semi-ending of this version of the book. The rewrite will start when one of my existing series finishes, as I don't really have the production speed to write four series at once, especially at the lengths I usually write my books to (and this one is shaping up to be no exception).
Let me know if I'm forgetting anything. This book was discovery written as a combination of fun and a writing exercise (normally I'm an outliner), so I may have forgotten some stuff.
Next chapter will be more Amazon Apocalypse. Maybe another chapter 1 if I'm feeling motivated, but I'm starting to get a bit tired of rewriting that chapter, so I may just release chapter 2 for you guys.

I suppose without a maid storyline the maid doesn't make as much sense. But Aldrich would have house attendants like butlers,maids,cooks etc. Unless they all already fled you could have Count Grandhill dismiss them when he takes over. Once Alvin comes back to power he'd probably want to hire on those loyal to him though.
