Cyra and I snuck out of the arena before the fight Myrina was trying to pick got going. Hopefully, once they’d gotten their fill of being beaten half to death by Myrina, nobody would dare to come after Cyra or me, since we had placed even higher in the tournament.
There was quite a crowd heading out of the arena, so we joined up with them. A few people recognized us and made us sign their programs—which I did with a flourish using Lightsculptor’s Brush. Then I got asked to do the same across some barrel-chested guy’s stomach. Next thing I know, a young woman bared her breasts to me and asked that I paint my magic across them.
Cyra stepped forward and pushed the young woman back with a scowl. “Leave my husband alone,” she snapped. Grabbing my hand, she stalked off, dragging me into the nearest clothing shop.
“We have just the thing for famous individuals like yourselves who want an inconspicuous night out on the town,” the shopkeeper explained after hearing our request. “Here are two cloaks of unnoticeability.” He puffed out his chest. “They’re enchanted.”
I examined the fine cloaks, each of which sported an enormous price tag. The enchantments were hidden, and all the shopkeeper could tell me about them was that they made slight changes to the wearer’s face and increased one’s resistance to having others use Examine on you.
I peered through a higher spatial dimension to get a good look at the enchantments and wasn’t impressed.
I ended up buying two nice, but regular cloaks.
“You didn’t want the magical ones?” Cyra asked when we left the shop. “I thought you wizard types loved enchanted gear.”
I grinned. “Let me show you something neat.”
Pulling two silver coins out of my pocket, I used my aethersmith powers to heat them and then flattened them into long, thin plates. Using lightsculptor’s Brush, I drew the same enchantment I’d seen on the expensive cloaks the shopkeeper had tried to sell us, along with a few improvements. A quick Mana Bolt flashed the projected image onto the flattened coins, and I folded them into the collar of each cloak. The fabric twisted in on itself, and the palm-length strips of silver vanished into the material like some bar-room magician’s coin trick.
“There. Now instead of being worth one contribution point, these cloaks are worth a thousand.” I tossed Cyra her cloak, then put on my own.
Our new cloaks now did more than significantly lower the wearer’s Charisma stat and increase resistance to being Examined. Now, anyone glancing at us would be subtly encouraged to ignore us. Only someone right in front of us and looking right at us would see the illusions that changed our hair and eye color to a rather common brown.
Cyra hefted the gift, shaking her head but wearing a smile. “Maybe I should have taken up magic instead of the sword. If you spent all day making stuff like this, you’d bring in more coin than my entire territory on Themyscira.”
With the comfort of anonymity, we spent the rest of the day walking, talking, and enjoying ourselves, just as we’d done before going our separate ways. It was nice to catch up with Cyra like this, it felt… appropriate.
“Come on, let’s have an early dinner at our usual place. Then we can have some fun, wife.” I brushed my knuckles along Cyra’s cheek.
She blushed. “You really enjoy calling me that.”
“I worked hard to earn the right to call you that. I’m just making up for lost time.”
Cyra blushed even harder before shaking her head. “I still can’t believe that was you in Doomblade’s armor all along.”
I chuckled. “You probably would have figured it out if you’d looked into it. But no, you had to be Miss Stoic standing there with the weight of the world on her shoulders.”
“I guess I was a little too focused on my duty. Maybe I should—”
“No,” I stopped her. “You don’t need to change a bit, Cyra. Just be the amazing woman I fell in love with. That’s all you have to do.”
Hearing my words, Cyra beamed at me.
“You and I are a team from now on,” I continued, “and I’ll be looking out for you. Okay?”
Cyra’s face took on a permanent scarlet hue, and stayed that way for the rest of the afternoon. For such a fearsome warrior, she turned into a shy, blushing maiden when I said anything embarrassingly mushy. It was awfully cute.
We ate dinner at the same place where we’d had our date, and where I’d later gone with Sakura, Myrina, and Bridget.
“Your usual table?” the waitress asked.
Cyra nodded quickly, and we found ourselves at a window table for two near not far from the private rooms where we’d eaten before. Despite her smaller size, Cyra ate like the Amazonian she was and went through a full six-courses by the time I’d finished my appetizer. After that, we talked about what we’d been up to, and I learned a little more about the auxiliary forces the Samhain family had wanted Cyra to command for her brother.
“This is important for my elder brother’s future on Glacia. If he can save one of the border planets, he’ll return a war hero, deep into B-Grade, with the wealth of an entire planet. Mother is rallying as much support from the Samhain Clan as she can. My father gave him a good army. Father even gifted me some armor, a sword, and a bunch of level advancing stuff to help me secure a tournament victory,” Cyra explained.
“That armor you were wearing was a gift from your father?” I asked.
“Among other things.”
I scratched the back of my neck in embarrassment. “Sorry about ruining his gift. We’ll stop by my shop later and pick you out some replacement gear. As for your brother and family… well, I’m sure we’ll figure something out. I’ll make sure he doesn’t get screwed over.”
Cyra let out a sigh of relief, though she still looked tense. “Thank you. The Samhain Clan hasn’t done nearly as much for you as it should. What you are doing now is bigger than saving our ancestral realm on Themyscira. If you wanted to ask Grandma Luthrin for a favor, I’m sure she’d grant it. She’ll probably insist on doing so, given how much her branch of the family will be counting on you.”
“Is that so?” I rubbed my chin in thought, thinking over what I could ask for.
I’d met Cyra and Myrina’s grandmother briefly and knew her to be an immensely powerful warrior. Maybe it was time I pushed my abilities to the next level. I was nearly at B-Grade, and needed to start holding myself to a higher standard.
We chatted a bit about what I should ask for, and Cyra seemed to brighten as we talked. It was like that heavy melancholy that had clung to her simply melted away. By the end of dinner, Cyra seemed to have accepted my victory, and that we were together for good.
I had dueled her, and I had won. And it wasn’t some fake duel where she threw the match, either. In our duel, she’d fought her hardest, and I had prevailed despite her giving it her all, thereby winning the right to marry her by ancient Amazonian custom beyond any shred of doubt.
After dinner, we walked around the city, watching the unusual sky of the pocket world change into a few twinkling stars, though the night lights that dotted the streets of this magical city made them hard to make out.
“I’ve seen enough. Let’s go, Carter.” Cyra nudged my shoulder after we’d spent several minutes staring up at the night sky and chatting.
“Where to?” I asked.
“I suspect we’ll need a bed for the night, but I’m not bringing you to the family compound,” Cyra replied.
She had a sly but nervous look on her face. Most of the time, I hardly remembered she was Myrina’s sister, but at that moment I sensed distinctly Myrina-like intentions.
“It’s okay,” I told her. “We have an apartment in the city. Technically, it’s Bridget’s apartment, but it has three bedrooms, and we all stay there.”
I brought her back to Bridget’s apartment. A fancy hotel room would probably have been more romantic, but there would be plenty of time for that later, and I suspected this would be a long and—if her sister was any indication—fairly loud night.
“You know what happens on wedding nights, right?” I nudged Cyra in the shoulder after unlocking the apartment door.
As tough as she was, I didn’t want to push her too hard, or too fast. Relationship stuff seemed to be a soft spot for the proud Amazonian warrior beside me. I pushed open the door and led her inside.
“You can just lay back and—”

Should be and it seemed Perhaps it should be but slowing almost to a stop I think change fiancé to husband. There’s no uncertainty on that score in this version. Should be restrain her hands
