The transparent and emissive shaders into an add shader that you use here has saved me several times now, on a totally non-candle-related project lol

Thanks, Peter.

@Steve Cypert sounds like something I would reach out to Patreons Support Team about https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

All well and good, but why was I locked out on the premise I didn't have an account, then billed for the account I didn't have? I was billed twice. Once for the new one and once for the one that had supposedly expired. I'll check again when next month's bill comes in. There shouldn't be more than one monthly charge.

If you buy a Patreon membership at the end of the month, you'll be charged again on the 1st of the next month. For example, if you start your membership on the 28th of July, you'll be charged on the 28th and then again on the 1st of August, just a few days later. However, if you wait until the 1st of the month to start your membership, you'll be charged on the 1st and then again on the 1st of the following month. This way, you get a full month of membership before being charged again.

Hey, Ian. Off topic concern here. Patreon recently blocked me indicating I hadn't paid the automatic payment. I assumed it was a glitch but went ahead and set up my payment again. This month's credit card bill showed Patreon had billed me twice. Any idea what that's about?

Do you have a video explaining dynamic range and how to know how bright lighting should be, I never know when to make a light brighter, or adjust the exposure and if that makes a difference

Lex Avellino

Thoughtful and thorough answer as always, brother! Thanks for sharing your hustle💚

Okay! Just wanted you to know since it is your content! Awesome vids

Honestly, I just appreciate that he links to the patreon :P And I don't think they get any money from it, so I think they're just doing it so folks can learn?? I dig that.

No you're right, it's a balance! Point lights are prioritized by the path tracer, but there's a "if everything is prioritized, then effectively nothing is" deal you can get from having too many lights (I think this was more of a problem a few years ago). Whereas emissive materials aren't prioritized, so if you're trying to light a whole room with one of them you either have to 1.) make it big enough that the path tracer just "happens" to find it or 2.) keep it dim enough so that the fireflies aren't too egregious. In this case, the reason the invisible emissive geometry is so much larger than the flame texture itself is to address reason 1*, and the fact that they're candles hopefully sort of addresses 2. Basically- if you're trying to light a whole room with a single candle, you'd probably want a point light, but if you just want a few on a shelf casting a warm glow, these should be pretty optimized! *I do this with streetlight models, too, if I'm going to have a bunch of them in the background- usually a big invisible emissive plane underneath the visible light, to keep it rendering quick (just doesn't work well with volumetrics sometimes, since you can see the shape of the emissive geometry in the fog)

I saw this too the other week :/

Hey, Ian! I had happened to stumble upon this playlist by someone random person on YouTube which has a bunch of Patreon videos in it. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWCOOdH-MR7PEG3FQhz058eej7S6epWei&si=F3LIYG_aZdSVWWK3 that’s the link

Are the emissive materials in the light boost material more efficient than just having a point light? I thought small emissive materials created more noise. Just making sure I have the latest wisdom 😅

Finally, I can achieve my cottage core dreams of having candles everywhere
