Yes it's from a reference image and yes I've tried using procreate but I'm not a huge fan of using the ipad and procreate definitely has its limits in a full concept art workflow.

I gradually push the contrast with the layers of shading. It's just pressure control. The color is always set to black and every pass gets a bit darker. The idea is to finish with the darkest areas and sharpest highlights in the final pass.

Love this one! I see you're gradually pushing the contrast, making areas darker and darker. Do you control that with pressure, so simply just keep pressing harder, or do you use mulitply/levels or something else?
