Here is an older pic of Linus and Piet:
STORY
When Piet is in his mid-twenties and lives his pianist career to its fullest, he discovers this crazily talented 12 years old kid playing piano on Youtube. He sees his potential and wants to help him someway to shape his rawness. Piet struggles with the idea to teach him because he doesn't have the time and has no experience in teaching (and Linus' parents couldn't afford it). But they find a way and Linus becomes his student.
Piet is very strict and expects Linus to work hard. But he sometimes forgets that Linus is just a kid and was just playing around making music before he met Piet. Their relationship gets tense from time to time. Linus has a feisty attitude and often acts rebellious which drives Piet nuts. (kind of reminds him of good old times with Tim, too)
When Piet takes two or three more students in over the next years, Linus gets jealous. He sees his special friendship/mentorship with Piet in danger.
As Linus gets older, he develops another kind of interest in his mentor. Piet too isn't invulnarable to Linus' flirty charme.
But when they kiss for the first time, Piet rejects him. Linus doesn't understand why Piet is so hesistant. Is it the age gap? Does Piet love someone else?
Translation:
Linus: I can't find them, Mr. Maiberg! Where should they be?
Piet: In a box ... wait, I'm coming downstairs in a sec.
FUN FACT: I always imagined Linus to use the formal term with Piet ("Mr. Maiberg") because I thought Piet would be older when they first meet. But since Piet is younger now, Linus will use his first name casually, but will still use formal speech in public sometimes which makes them crack up later. I love it, haha. (Same as when Phil calles Satoshi "professor" in the beginning even though they're having some sort of physical relationship going on.)

The Urge
Good old times with Tim? Does this mean that Tim and Piet develop real mentor/mentee relationship? Or was that an old idea that you dropped? Because this version of Piet who had this relationship with Linus seems like someone who Piet would not like much.

Haven't read it, thanks for the recommendation! His approach sounds familiar; I do exactly the same. That's why I sometimes throw random existing characters together and see what happens. (Levi and ... Julian for example.) It feels like a child playing with lego or something :D

If you haven't read it, I highly recommend Stephen King's On Writing (D: Das Leben und das Schreiben) which is about his journey to become a writer and his writing process in general. The gist of it is that he starts off with an interesting set of characters, puts them in an interesting situation and then just lets them bounce off one another, resulting in dynamic and believable interactions. It seems to me like you have a similarly character based approach to writing, so I thought it might be relevant.

This. When I started developing Green&Gold three years ago and other stories that came along, I was influenced by classical BL stories although I didn't read them that much (two guys fall in love and they get together) until I slowly noticed a shift in my personal interests. For a long time, I was truly confused. These kind of manga became boring to me. The relationships of my characters were getting more complicated and I never found a way to end the story because I didn't want it to end. I didn't want to lose the conflict. If the characters were happy, I would lose them. I love to think about difficult relationships (student/teacher lately). Or just crushes that can never be. Or they are for a short amount of time, but they fall apart because they're unhealthy as you say. All of this is based on my very personal preferences as a writer and I'm sometimes conflicted whether there will be a good message in the end while I'm just playing with the characters without wanting to actually tell something. So that's me rambling haha. I have to save your text; it's really on point.

There is potential for a very interesting story here that plays with the expectations of the readers. We tend to take for granted that the “happy ending” in a love-story is one where the couple gets together in the end and live happily ever after together. But what if it's not in the best interest of the people involved to get together? You end up with a sort of dissonance, where the tropes and conventions of the genre pull in one direction and common sense and rationality in the other. When the “happy ending” is also the “bad ending”, people can be made to think about what is really necessary for a healthy relationship. Alternatively the difference between falling in love and actually loving someone; something that tends to be glossed over, even in more “realistic” stories. So, yeah … power balance, mutual emotional support etc. etc., I'll stop rambling now.
