Either that or when you get to their fortress of power you find out its a baking competition.

And in game we first must defeat every tier under them to take on the big boss himself. After in a scenario scripted event where we defeat one of the mini bosses, the main boss talks to us in an ominous way how he is going to defeat us. We then can finally defeat the fortress of one of the evil guy henchman as it is in a weakened state, and we then control a portion of the map.
You know they are the bad guys because, DRAMATIC LIGHTING :P
