In this video, I do a quick review of the artwork posted in the discord, walk you through my process for creating the artwork for this challenge, and discuss common mistakes and tips for tackling paintings like these in the future!
I talk a lot about asaro heads and planes, and I mention a previous tutorial I've done on this topic. You can find my face planes tutorial here! I love to see this process because I have that problem with my one and only study. I was doing it with alcohol markers and at some point same as your first attempt the blending got to messy and I loose my 3D shapes that were showing so nice her jaw and nose with the light. I think the values sometimes are really hard to distinguish with this kind of light colors. So I appreciate to see how you went back and start again to build more stronger your sketch. I think I will do more versions of this practice. Thank you for sharing your process so truthful. π

That's a really good point! I think I would use the same workflow (midtone, slowly building up color accents one by one) but I think the main difference would be the midtone specifically, which would be darker and need the right degree of vibrance. What's the name of the artist you mentioned around 4 minutes in? It sounds like Mazerat, but I'm sure I'm misspelling that because I can't find them!

Are there differences in the way you use colour and lighting when people are darker skinned? Itβs hard to find colour tutorials that use dark skin as the baseline. Our skin responds somewhat differently to light.
