Honestly, reading through the archives lead me to a newfound pity for Max and his state of being, he's a good soul that's been forced into an absolutely horrid position where everyone he's around is abusing him, even Kiva arguably. And Kiva is the one actually doing his best not to! I'd imagine that's part of why they broke up before the comic started, Kiva genuinely didn't want to hurt Max like he felt he had been. Kiera on the other hand is a master at manipulating other people and knows exactly how to get what she wants out of anyone she meets.

However, as I remembered vaguely, we don't actually know what Kiera asked Max to do before that. And looking back through the Archives, Reese's goons were after Max before he said anything during the show.
