L did say he didn't really think it would be possible. But like a Sherlock Holmes type of character, you accept the possibilities that are left once you rule out everything else. The idea that Kira can kill from afar was the possibility he was left with, and so he tested it no matter how unlikely he thought it was. I doubt he thinks magic, he just accepts there is something he doesn't understand or know he has now proven exists that allows this to happen and moves on from there.
