Chapter 262 - Siege
🕑 Added 2025-11-05 18:56:13 +0000 UTCAkana Praediar’s attacks on Torrviol had been blunted initially, but as the 243rd loop proceeded, they redoubled their efforts, now coming from the south instead of the west. Presumably, that meant Cairnmouth had become occupied. Occasionally, Mirian would negotiate with a leadership figure and agree to halt attacks on Torrviol, only to have something happen and the attacks redouble.
It didn’t make sense. How much blood is worth the Gate? Who is behind undermining the negotiations? The continued attacks didn’t make logical or political sense. The most powerful people in Akana’s leadership had to know the stuff about the Gate being a secret weapon was bullshit. There was no rational motivation to throw so many soldier’s lives away. Then there’s another hand at work. There must be. Scebur? she wondered. They would have been unhindered by Liuan this cycle. But if Scebur just wanted to look for relics in Baracuel, throwing the country into chaos and war and blowing up libraries and temples was a stupid way to do it.
Either way, she had work to do, and she was still too stubborn to give up.
The defensive scheme she and General Hanaran worked out was that her soldiers would man fortified strong-points with overlapping fields of fire, each of which was connected by passages in the Torrviol Underground. This would force any Akanan forces to commit a large number of soldiers and sorcerers to overwhelm the defenders, but then those concentrations of force could be more easily wiped out by Mirian.
The problem was that she had to sleep sometime. Eventually, the Akanans seemed to settle on a strategy of probing attacks every few hours to try to trigger a response. They’d gotten better at hiding their artillery in the thick forest south of town, then better at scattering after a probing attack. If Mirian didn’t respond, sometimes they then concentrated their forces and assaulted a strongpoint. Torrviol was cut off from reinforcements as long as she kept the Gates aligned as they were, so a war of attrition worked in their favor.
Then, Hanaran’s diviners noticed a new build up of forces, a clear indication of an incoming attack.
One of the intelligence officers briefed Mirian. “Our divination caught glyphs found only in levitation wands and magebane rifles. A lot of them. That means they’ve deployed their Sorcerer Elite. That’s Akana’s equivalent of the Praetorians.”
“Something special about these ‘magebane’ rifles that goes beyond spellpiercer ammo?”
“Someone high up in the Deeps might be able to tell you more. We just got the need-to-know intelligence.”
If it’s secretive, it’s probably orichalcum bullets. The Church has less centralized power than the Luminates, so they’ve had an easier time using the holy metals as a secret weapon.
“How many?”
“Sorcerer Elite groups deploy as half-companies. Twenty high-myr sorcerers, backed by ten rifles, ten battlemages, and the last ten are communications and officers to coordinate. Given what we’ve picked up on, there’s at least three companies deployed, though there could be more in the rear. The diviners have also picked up glyph mixes that don’t align with any military group we know about.”
Interesting. Does that mean a unit they’ve managed to keep hidden, or some kind of irregular? “Are there Baracueli units that match the glyphs you’re picking up?”
That thought clearly disturbed the intelligence officer. “I don’t believe so, but we’ll double check. You think…?”
“General Corrmier is a traitor. It’s possible some of the Baracueli Army is assisting this operation.”
The officer’s face contorted briefly with rage before he could hide it again. “Yes, Prophet,” he said, and withdrew.
Mirian looked out from the battlements of Bainrose Castle at the smoldering wreckage that surrounded Torrviol. Months of fighting had filled the fields and woods with broken spell wagons and shattered artillery. The castle’s west wall had become a pile of rubble, and the southern farms were blackened.
There is no beauty in this, she thought, and wrinkled her nose. When the airship dreadnoughts had burned, the air had become acrid, and the stench had lingered. Nothing seemed to clean it.
Mirian levitated down from the wall and to the courtyard. She blinked beneath it, then went through the Gate.
She emerged, only slightly damp, from the Mahatan Oasis and went to the palace.
Gabriel was in his favorite room, now redecorated with his favorite furniture, surrounded by women and wine. Mirian hadn’t asked what he’d done with the prince. She spoke in Cuelsin so that most of the people around him wouldn’t be able to understand. “I’m going to be redirecting the Gate soon. That will cut the cycle short, but it’ll be better than the Gate being destroyed”
Gabriel gave her a pointed, mournful look, then looked around. “Are you sure you can’t just destroy Akana’s armies by yourself? You’ve trashed one army group, what’s a few more?” Then he gave a real sigh, and Mirian saw the flicker of an expression she rarely saw on the man. It was like a dark cloud had passed over his face, just for a moment. A glimpse of the man behind the mask.
“Did you want to talk?” Mirian asked quietly.
His tone was cold and even. “What would be the point? Most days I can forget and live in the moment. I do detest not being able to keep anything I’ve built.” Then he perked up, his emotions back under control. “Well, you’ll have to ask Ibrahim how his little vacation to Mayat Shadr went, because there’s no chance of those nagual making it back across the sea. I think a few of them are making the attempt, but I’d bet thousand florins they don’t make it. No word from the island at all, but I’m sure they’re fine. As far as I can tell, every army group Akana has made the crossing, so there’s none left to harass Tlaxhuaco. Akana took Palendurio easily, had to bleed a bit to get Cairnmouth, but now there’s guerrilla warfare along the farms and villages of the west. That’s screwing up their ability to move east, and without our bloodthirsty friend leading the Rambalda revolt, Alkazaria’s in a much better position.”
Gabriel took a long sip of wine, then continued. “Took a few weeks, but once the remains of parliament got it in their heads what was happening, they gave what was left of Dawn’s Peace and those Naasqual up in Falijmali great deals, then started pulling everything they could north. One of the Baracueli Admirals is moving up and down Persama’s coast on his own sea campaign. He can’t even harass southern Rift Sea logistics, but what he can do is prevent so much as a gram of foss from moving north. I think he also planned on intercepting trade convoys moving north from Zhighua, but joke’s on him, the leviathans already ate them all. Florin City is staying neutral—big shock, I’m sure—but with the rail lines cut, Akana Praediar simply can’t move east. They’re flying sorties with the smaller airships—caught that Baracueli admiral off guard at least once—but I don’t think dropping spellbombs on cities is having the effect they thought it would, and the Baracueli navy quickly learned to stay out of range.”
“Where are they concentrating forces?”
“Aside from Torrviol? Well, they need a big chunk of the army dedicated to occupation, because Corrmier’s a wildcard and they don’t trust him. There’s a big buildup north of the Casnevar Mountains and in one of the southern passes. I think the one up north is a feint, and they plan to move south, take Rambalda so they can get the foss flowing again. Once they’ve done that, they can start slowly pushing along the Ibaihan River to Alkazara, then grind them down with a siege. Eventually, I think they’d win, but the armies would bleed for a few years.”
Gabiel took another sip of wine, then raised his goblet. “So there you have it! We finally have an answer to what happens with the Akanan invasion. Well, mostly. Those dreadnoughts falling out of the sky threw a flush onto a pile of pairs.”
Mirian raised an eyebrow. “Was that a card metaphor?”
“Hah! Forgot you don’t do those. I still maintain that if the dreadnoughts don’t get turned into refuse piles that Akana pulls through much faster and with fewer casualties. Corrmier slaughtering a bunch of priests in the Grand Sanctum, though… I honestly don’t know why he did that. If he doesn’t do that, I don’t think you get nearly the kind of irregular resistance around the countryside and Akana could get foss flowing through Rambalda.”
That was strange. Corrmier was allied with the noble family that Pontiff Oculo was party of. Without knowing the details of the situation, though, it was hard to say what happened. A falling out between the families? A mistake? Or was Corrmier always going to try to consolidate his power? She thought of what Zhuan had said about elite tendencies.
Mirian mulled over what the other Prophet had told her. “And how confident are you that what you’ve just told me is actually true?”
Gabriel laughed. “Oh good, you did learn something from all those war history books you read. Fairly confident, because, um…” He paused, and Mirian felt his aura brushing up against hers. Info both sides, he said through soul-speak.
“You’re improving,” she said, and glanced around the room trying to guess which of the women were spies, and then which ones were Akanan and which ones were Baracueli.
“Yeah.” He shivered. “Don’t like touching minds like that. Feels… wrong.”
Mirian nodded, but she didn’t actually share the sentiment. Sharing auras with a spirit was fascinating. Soul-to-soul communication allowed communication that went beyond words.
“Well, hopefully whatever it is we learned from this mess was worth it,” Mirian said. “I’ll swap the Gates as soon as I’m back through.”
“I’m sure we learned something,” Gabriel said, leaning back in his chair and swirling the wine in his goblet. “You’re going to try Operation Oh Shit?”
Mirian glowered at him. “It’s not called that.”
The other Prophet snorted. “Wish I could watch. If it works, its bound to be the funniest military operation since Car Dunam got an army to charge by mooning them. Well, see you in the dream. Or maybe not. I’ll connect Mahatan to you-know-where when you’re done on your side.” He raised his goblet, and Mirian departed.
She made her way back to Torrviol. The Akanan artillery had started its bombardment. The attack would come soon then. She went to Eyeball’s chamber.
I’ll ask to swap the Torrviol Gate to the Jiandzhi in a moment. And Gabriel still has permission—until I revoke it—to manipulate the Mahatan and Palendurio Gate. But first… it’s still bothering me. Why can’t you help? You know about the Labyrinth. You know the purpose of Luamin. You live here too.
Eyeball flickered, colors swirling over their carapace. YOU KNOW HOW HUMANS HAVE SILLY POLITICS AND DECIDE TO RUN THINGS IN NONSENSICAL WAYS THAT CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR EVERYONE AND THEN GET REALLY MAD WHEN YOU POINT OUT HOW STUPID THEY’RE BEING?
Surely, the Elder Gods moved beyond that.
THEY DID. THEY MOVED BEYOND ALL OF US. BUT YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW IT WORKS.

HAVE YOU STOPPED LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER? The Elder creature started flashing their amusement at ‘shoulder.’
I see, Mirian said. Even the Elder Gods had a vision for how the world below and void above should be. She had stopped worrying so much about the other Prophets when she’d exceeded them all in power and ability. But she still guarded relicarium’s secret as best she could. Still worried what they would do if they could match her. Too much was at stake for her not to worry. It was the fate of the world, after all. But when the Gods disagree, it’s the Cataclysm.
Eyeball didn’t say anything to that. They were skirting the rules again, but Conductor hadn’t come to scold them, so the violations weren’t too bad.
Mirian sighed. Alright, swap the Gates. Then let’s raise the Torrviol Gate to the surface in… an hour.
HAHA, YOU ARE QUITE CONFIDENT. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN.
Wait, how much time do you spend watching me?
Eyeball just flickered in amusement. Mirian shook her head and levitated to the surface, making her way back into Bainrose. General Hanaran started as Mirian suddenly flew beside her. “Withdraw all excess forces north. Pare down points to the skeleton crews, and evacuate the southern strongpoints.”
General Hanaran nodded, then began giving the orders. Outside, the bombardment continued.
Mirian flew into position above the castle. She cast a series of far-ranging divination spells, then used remote speech to the few mages and gunners who were staying behind. “Akanan assault forces are gathering in three prongs: southwest, south, and southeast. Strongpoint five, adjust your target box five degrees west, strongpoint six, two degrees east. Mages, rifles, remember to stay at the edge and pick off the periphery. Retreat in fifty-eight minutes. Set your pocket watches.”
The bombardment of Torrviol continued, the ground shaking and air crackling as earthshaker shells and lightning shells periodically slammed into the town. One of the few remaining shield engines took a direct hit, the shell piercing the force shield and destroying the device instantly. One of the strongpoints messaged about wards failing and a passage collapsing. Then, some ten minutes later, the Akanan artillery stopped.
“Here they come.” She cut the remote speech spell. When she’d last fought the Praetorians in the skies of Alkazaria, she’d been overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Here, they’d have an even greater advantage, but she’d grown more powerful and would have some back up. It would be a fighting retreat, and she had no doubt almost every soldier who’d stayed behind would die. As long as they didn’t die immediately. She needed the Akanans to commit the majority of their forces. She knew their doctrine. Knew what would make them commit hard to an offensive.
She looked down at the courtyard. Just under an hour. Her messenger had already made it through the newly connected portal. An hour was about how long it would take. She wished she’d contacted her father this loop, but they’d both agreed it would be suspicious if they worked too closely together every cycle.
Mirian thought of what Eyeball had implied.
It’s not power for power’s sake, though. It’s power for a good reason. And what alternative is there?
She cast another divination spell. The Sorcerer Elite had taken to the air and were on their way. Mirian looked up, casting a lens spell to survey the incoming forces. Alongside the elite forces, there were battleskiffs flying in formation. Nearby, she caught sight of one of the groups, levitating alongside the airship. Most were wearing breastplates covered with what looked to be orichalcum wire. Some, though, were wearing Akanan suits.
She recognized two of the faces flying with the sorcerers. One of them was Archmage Tyrcast. Another, she’d seen at Sylvester Aurum’s party.
That’s what the anomalous glyphs were. Irregulars, then, but not the kind she could just dismiss.
Akana Praediar hadn’t just sent the Sorcerer Elite.
They’d also sent a bunch of archmages.

Mirian needs to tell everyone about Relicarium YESTERDAY. Then everyone will also understand why exploring the labyrinths is so useful. Then once she can gain trust by submitting such huge information coupled with who her father is maybe (because lets be real Mirian fucked up hard and burned up a whole lot of Trust by just hiding this information for over a hundred loops and essentially torturing Ibrahim the entire time by not helping him save his wife). She can get everyone a tool incorporating the important Focuses and catalysts to soulbind so they can all dreamchat, heal, do magic ect in any situation. this would significantly help the two friendly Akanan Travelers to fight the evil one for example and so forth nevermind getting Ibraham as essentially an eternal ally just like that!!!!

Mirian is going to smoke these bastards. Operation ‘Oh Shit’ might be something like transporting a whole bunch of monsters from the southern jungles right into the middle of these mages. I imagine an emperor tree or two could give Mirian the necessary opening to murder the shit out of everyone.

Looks like things are finally heating up. This is how I'd imagine one would try to take care of Mirian. It feels a lot like how she took care of the elder titan. Now it's time to see how it'll unfold. - I think she'll be harder pressed then most think. They have quite a bit over the praetorians. Guns, canons and significantly more mages and support personnel, not to mention multiple archmages. That being said, I also feel like she'll better know how to handle such a battle of attrition now, and she has the home advantage, so it could go either way. - Will we get to see operation Oh Shit? or will simply be able to hold them off herself? - If this is indeed Sceburs attempt to take her to take her down, the big question becomes how he intends to keep her down. If we assume he has figured out how to remove a needle, he should also realize it wouldn't on a target that's figured out how to strike her own. Or perhaps he found a different way? - Will we learn who he is? Most likely he will have to show up in person for whatever he's planning.

I don't think they know about relicarium nor that Miriam has the relics, the priest that were killed by Corrmier were likely due to him interrogating them as to the location of the relics on the assumption that they're being collected at the start of each loop

If they know about relicarium the goal could be to eliminate her, then soul sync with the ones she does possess to deny them her in the future - if they know how to.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking Liuan made up Scebur to give herself more room to maneuver. They might also be pushing her to the limit to see if she has any soulbound artifacts.

I hope we finally get to see a man made suppression field in action. Imagine the entire Akanan army marching in... and all their magic gets turned off. No guns, no engines, no artillery, and no spells. Problem is, I'm not sure if suppression fields work that way. Mirian said that auramancers can easily do what suppression fields do. Does that mean suppression fields are just a way for artifice to do what auramancers are already doing, or is this still a legitimately new and powerful technique? Best part is, if Mirian legitimately cracked suppression fields, I see a few ways for her to make them selectively ignore her allies. Maybe leave a mark on the person's soul, or have them carry a marker with the right glyphs. Suppression fields target the soul-aura boundary, so with a tribound spell, she can target every soul in the area, as long as that soul doesn't have the right mark or isn't close to the right marker.

Yeah clearly seems a targeted mission at Mirian, given from how Tyrcast was described he wouldn't volantarily put himself into a precarious combat situation unless forced too. Time for the Headmaster to take some dues given he should be very motivated to fight this out alongside Mirian.

Yep, either he is hiding himself remotely and taking notes or has developed a shield from Mirians' senses and plans to kick Mirian off the loop when she is exhausted after extensive fighting. Still believe Scebur is his actual, true name and he was the adviser of the previous cycle.

This entire siege is clearly just Liuan (or "Scebur") testing how much force is enough to overwhelm Mirian. The fact that Mirian hasn't considered the possibility despite how well it fits the facts actually kind of lends credence to the theory by way of how it builds shock value for the eventual twist.
