I imagine the healing theory relies on assuming the benefit was desperate self preservation

Tanna

In my opinion it's a combination of multiple factors, but primarily it's because he's outside their sphere of influence. Most of the other archmages are more "domesticated" so to say. They move in the same circles as other Baracueli and Akanan elites, have similar interests and goals. They're much more susceptible to the Praetorians, RID, the Deeps. The Baracueli archmages are required to submit their spells to the Praetorians so they can develop countermeasures. I doubt it's different in Akana. Gaius on the other hand is a wild card. He does what he wants and is unwilling to give in to that influence. Compound the fact that he fought against their side in a war and continued to be a force that hindered Baracuel pushing boundries on the treaties, the cultural fear and animosity towards necromancy, you get the attitude towards him we see today.

Armo

I wonder why the Baracueli preators are so worried about Atrah. Is it really this worry that Archmages are incompatible with the notion of a republic? Is it that they are afraid that Atrah will strike back against them for past misdeeds? Is it that they’re driven by a religious dislike of necromancy? Or is there some other reason? If it is because they believe that archmages are incompatible with the notion of a republic, I struggle to see how that is the case. Atrah kept to his own most of the time in the last hundred years (If I remember correctly). Yes, he is a stakeholder you have to keep in mind, and dangerous for people that break agreements with him, but as with many factors his importance (and indeed influence on how society develops) is determined by socially constructed factors which have so far been mostly positive. I just don’t buy that it is a ‘fundamental’ issue with powerful archmages at the level of rarity that we’re talking about.

I've got to wonder what evidence Miriam has for the Triarchy trying to heal the Ominian. We know there was a lot of human sacrifice and necromancy—did she investigate how that energy was used? Because we have an apparently untraceable entity wandering about and I have to wonder how much that took to create. Leaves me wondering what they were trying to do, especially in light of how the current powers are behaving. I can't imagine helping a god unless they saw some personal benefit.

The armour is meant help her channel a ley line I am pretty sure that is a hundred times more power than she normally uses. I think the armour will also have at least one of those infinite heat sinks and combined with her father's energy transfer defences on the skeletons she might be close to invincible, for threats we have seen, while using the armour. I don't think this will remove all tension because, A there might be more dangerous enemies to fight, B the threat might not be solvable though violence and C it honestly doesn't change much she is already incredibly strong. This armour will make her better at holding a point but if she is the target her manoeuvrability will let her escape from any force that can threaten her. Whether or not she can beat all the prophets forces together she would absolutely be able to exploit their difficulty coordinating and the distrust between countries.

FuriousDee

First that is Ibrahim not Gabriel and second she isn't using all of it.

Erebus

Thanks for the chapter 😊

This feels like Mirian's "crossing the Rubicon" moment. She's about to use up a lot of very rare and non-renewable resources (the relicarium in particular) for a personal project without consulting the other prophets. If it doesn't work it'll just make any future projects that much harder. Plus, I think this will permanently ruin any goodwill and relationship with Ibrahim once he learns about relicarium and that Mirian wasn't willing to share even a little bit so that he wouldn't need to start each cycle watching his wife die in front of him. Edit: Gabriel to Ibrahim (thanks FuriousDee)

Armo

People are speculating above that Miriam is going to be prevented from building her regulator armor, or it is going to be snatched from her hands by another prophet. I wonder if that is the case. I think the view is that Mirian with even more powerful artefacts would defeat any tension over combat outcomes there still is in the story, so they must surely be given to her opponents, right? I dunno, it’s possible it will go one way or another. In terms of tension, I think that while Mirian has shown herself to be incredibly powerful during the siege, she can’t yet singlehandedly face the prophets and all their assets in an open field engagement (or whatever is considered a fair encounter). Maybe with Atrah and a supporting force while defending in well entrenched territory, but even then, Mirian was about to lose without the titans. Whether the regulator armour would give her the necessary push over the line to truly being a one woman army that can ignore almost all opposition is down to what exactly Mirian’s armour can do. Even if it doubles her power and endurance, it doesn’t necessarily mean that she would be able to take down all her adversaries just yet. As the loops become longer, I think the inertia of total comparative power the prophets can bring to bear will naturally swing towards the more social prophets and it will become more difficult for Mirian to keep up. The Akanan army can be rapidly trained in tactics and advanced spells to counter high power adversaries, outfitted with Orichalcum and Mythril weapons, and armed with other strategies which would significantly hamper Mirian’s ability to fight them directly. We have not seen this in full force just yet. It will take a significantly more tactical acumen, skill in magic and resource investment to negate that advantage with longer loops without a significant alpha strike to prevent accumulation of production and research. After all, one brilliant researcher working on something for 30 years may not do as much as 10000 regular researchers working on something for 1. I think some of the prophets are definitely thinking Mirian is being very suspicious with her ‘we’ll go there in a couple loops’ deflection. I’m not sure how much effort they will expend on monitoring Mirian this time, but I would definitely be looking out for spies. If they are not suspicious yet, I think the other prophets may become suspicious if they detect Mirian is drawing in resources like a black hole after finding the Divir moon. I would think Liuan’s RID is going to detect it - they’re surely watching. Maybe even Scebur is going to come back, whether or not he’s an invention of Liuan, and try to disrupt whatever Mirian is planning. Looking forward to finding out!

Mr NerfGun

I don't think that will be the case, but there may be some heavy interference.

Mr NerfGun

More like 40~50.

YarrowFlowers

I feel like Liuan folded too easily to Mirian’s desires for more ‘research time’ with Divir. Anyone with a violet focus (so all the prophets) could witness the mausoleum and see the staff and armor that Mirian is gunning for. I think the armor isn’t going to be made and all that relicarum and mythril will end up in the other prophets hands.

Dalayo Adeeko

How old is Miriam ? She should be like 70

FuriousDee

The author said she takes a nap with the tree to get here in chapter 266 comments

Whoops, snap

If Xecatl isnt an actual prophet herself but only gets her memories sent back through the tree prophet, how is she able to appear in these dreams? Did i miss something, or could anyone with the right focus appear in these dreams not just prophets, could they find some random hermit druid here one time or something if anyone can link to them?

Dessico

I forgot if this has been addressed previously but how is Xecatl able to access the dreamscape Mausoleum even though she's not a prophet?

UraniumPhoenix

Chapter 257 mentioned she needs 5 cubes for the armor design, and that throughout the different Vaults she's now found, she has more than enough.

Asur

Great chapter. Always love short PoV changes like this

UraniumPhoenix

Fixed, thanks.

Tanna

I'm not sure if the others will notice it by the date of the moonfall. If she just dashes for the mythril, then quickly closes the portal, it shouldn't have a significant effect on the timeline. It was open for many days the first time. Plus we have a new gate so the others won't be certain of the exact time it should end. Other things like whatever she's planning in Alkazaria might give her away though.

Part 2 coming early as a gift? How did you know my birthday was coming up

steamrick

How much relicarium did Miriam just acquire? Four cubes? More? I imagine that her intention is to bind the staff and the armor?

Anonymous

“always return her to“ here

BlastYoBoots

It’s hard to imagine what’s going to be more disastrous— if she is kept from completing the armor, or if she completes it. Won’t even a quick connection to Divir wear down the timetable enough for others to notice she visited there? Or does she feel too confident in her armor to care about what happens after she gets it, thinking no one could possibly surpass or disrupt her? Miriam’s downfall as we head into the crisis that drives the last Act and who and what she’ll have to fight against feels as inevitable as gravity, and it’s written well enough that I can’t begrudge the writing being on the wall. I’m on the edge of my seat! :D

Usually, chapter breaks feel just right. However, breaking it at the end of the Council felt too short, but breaking it at the end of her procurement would take too long. Even at well above average in length, this chapter doesn't feel complete. I think in the final draft, this chapter and the next one are going to be combined into a megachapter, so I'm going to label these as part 1 and 2. However, part 2 isn't complete yet, so in order to release this on time I'm breaking it up as I have. Enjoy!
