Love love scary Mirian.

Tanna

Wrong series?

Doc_harry

I don't remember now, But did Theo ever explain to his companions regarding the actual threat they are facing, the deaths of his previous friends & the insanely powerful demon titans or Vistgil?

A.Irsigler

Yeah, well. Mirian is really not all that good with people, huh? Especially if there are personal grievances in the mix. Its good characterisation though, I guess. I loved the bit with Gabriel. I loved that Gabriel basically knew all about Mirians struggles and how much they suck. What Mirian doesnt seem to consider is that while she makes great strides in progressing towards a resolution for the timeloop/apocalypse. Gabriel... is basically useless. He is good at politics and people - but nothing he does sticks. Mirian feels frustrated at having to work against people again and again, but at least she has some degrees of permanence in her successes. Gabriel has nothing of the sort. I wonder when Mirian reaches out to Gabriel to help her with the political situation. Like - yeah, whatever he can give her will not really satisfy or impress Mirian; but its probably better then what she could do and definitely will be a better use of their respective talents. When Gabriel at the end tells her to math it out and tell him the arithmetic of war, murder and bloodshed one really got the impression how fed up he was with her. Mirian loves math and science and finding a definitive objective best solution. Which rarely exists with people. Gabriels knows this and appears to be as lonely with that knowledge as Mirian is with the knowledge/understanding unique to her.

I find it kinda funny that you saying that her being an omnipotent archmage is hard to relate to. It's not supposed to be relatable. That's one of the themes in this story: the isolation, the separation, the detachment. It's all a consequence of the timeloop and the experiences Mirian has had She struggles to relate to people because she is no longer relatable. She is so far removed from the normal day to day interactions and emotions of ordinary people that she struggles to care . Of course she's unrelatable, I don't see her otherwise

Keifru

Sure one guy got ashed and scatted to stone. These people just stepped on a hot button issue thats going to see Mirian show them sublimation

TheLemooon

I think a possible path would be taking over the deeps with the praetorians and gaius(wich is also a high tenson colaboration i d like to read about). I think it would be possible, because the praetorians seem to realy care about baracuel, they helped her to kill aphoragoa when she made it look like a thread after all

Mr NerfGun

Given how powerful she is and how shocked Specter was, likely seconds.

lenkite

Yep, it has proven to work for 2 prophets already. Mirian is the only one who tries to negotiate everything and gets criticized by the readers here that she is too angry and blind. But 2 Prophets got to the top leadership by slaughtering everyone in their way.

lenkite

Why is she bothering to even speak with these corrupt people ? Any King who is OK with mass murder of children and mind control - including his OWN citizens and wants to keep the info private should NOT be listened to. She should not use politics to solve this- she is NOT Liuan. She should leverage her soul knowledge and spread the memories to everyone. Also Baracuel cannot be saved - it is pretty clear now. Was is at many times utterly inevitable - she should learn to recognize this. Just focus on getting her immediate objectives and realize that justice will not be achieved via law as both the law and the sworn oaths of royalty and politicans are not even a puppet-show in either of these nations. Akana , after all, took its original "values" from Baracuel - and made them even worse. After the loop is over, she should just let Akana go to war with Baracuel and then simply kill all the corrupt leadership of both nations during the conflict. Less people will actually die in the short term, if she kills off all the corrupt leadership quickly after War has been initiated. Of-course she needs a replacement team ready. And practice this several times in the loop to minimize casualties. Note that 2 Prophets have already successfully done this in the loops so far. Liuan is well on her way to be the third one.

Cathartic floor meld

Long time lurking reader of this, just wanted to comment a bit. This particular arc has felt a bit aimless until I thought about it a bit. As a novel heavily influenced by mol we can see some highlights of activity when mirian is put in front of concrete goals and works to achieve them - something mol does excellently. What bothered me recently is the lack of these concrete objectives (saving the world is a nebulous objective in this context as we see how many different definitions exist). I now see this arc as an opportunity to explore the darker themes of what it means to have these iterative experiences (something that is rare and mol covers only in alternative). I just wanted to encourage you to build on this theme and to make a payoff to this reality. Mirian as a character is crystalizing and there should be a dramatic break that distinguishes her - elsewise she's a near omnipotent mage and savior (something I find personally hard to relate to). I feel the best payoffs to this genre are personal developments and clever narrative tie-ins, so I hope to see you continue in this fashion. Happy holidays and best of luck!

Erlost

That would make for an absolutely epic loop.

BlastYoBoots

She might just do that, and then she’s going to have to see what truth lay in some of what Gabriel had said. Just how large of a body count lies at the end of such a loop. And if it doesn’t faze her… not all her fellow prophets might be so numb.

BlastYoBoots

Grammar error and a word choice suggestion: “She used a force sphere to crush the remains into a smaller and smaller circle,  continuously applying heat, until the man was a few liters of carbonized ash. When that was done, she had the force sphere pulverized the remains,”. —First, that should be “pulverize”. Second, saying force sphere crushed the remains into a smaller ‘circle’ doesn’t make as much sense as another sphere word like ‘orb’ would.

E

Hell yeah I’m ready for her to just annihilate all these assholes

Erebus

Oh

Zurko

Just to get the mental image right, when she deleted that guy in the archives, how long did that take? A couple seconds or a couple minutes? She used a few different spells to erase his existence but I'm not sure how quick she did it.

Tanna

“Those children are already dead” Totally valid reaction by Mirian here

RainbowCatTopHat

Yeah, how long has it been since the last loop she spent taking a break? Has she ever even taken multiple loops off from work? Even if the number of loops is limited she really really needs to take some time off, she can't be working at 100% when she's so frustrated.

UraniumPhoenix

Fixed, thanks.

Touch

World ending isn’t tangible enough, Mirian COULD become a tangible disaster herself! Or…she could use the mind control spells herself

Clifton

And the room exploded is such a delightful end for a chapter. It's satisfying but vague enough to be open to all sorts of interpretation.

Clifton

Not stupid so much as blinked by what he thinks is possible—which includes assuming that everyone else is bound by the same system he is.

Alexander Dupree

Well she might be trying just that now. I don’t know if they’re going to pretend it’s just an illusion though. She might just obliterate parliament and start fresh next loop. Probably not since it’d be a waste of the current resources she’s got to try to achieve some progress with though.

Touch

Edit “Tell me I’m reading this right,” she said, shoving it in Nikoline’s face.” face.

kyle

This might be the best long term solution, but it won't work here. Unless the occupying force is absolutely ruthless and slaughters all dissent, the merchants and other cogs will passively resist more not less. Even a perfect coup will be less effective than the current mess.

Clara

Why doesn't she do that memory sharing thing to parliament. Anyone disagrees with her? Bam, look at the apocalypse

Armo

I think… I think it’s time Mirian teamed up with Ibrahim. Help the Persamans obliterate Baracuel and conquer it entirely. It won’t be the least bloody way to do it, but people will do as they are told when conquered by an army of skeletons and vengeful Persamans. Resistance can be crushed or subverted with the loop. Alternatively, scare them enough with the Persamans to force them to act as Mirian demands. This would be bloody and I don’t think it would be morally right… but it would be very satisfying. At least for a time.

zoarian

It's smiting time! What a tough situation. Taking over as a Prophet Queen would probably work in the short term but it'd be very destabilizing in the long term. She also really needs to just chill for a couple of loops, hang out with her grandpa in the village, practice a bit with the sword master, etc. She's so high strung she disintegrates people who annoy her... that's not a good mindset

Pete Magnuson

Hmm, she's got a bit of temper these days... I'm sure it'll be fine...

Ecthe

Oh

Alexander Dupree

I support this tantrum. This guy is monumentally stupid!

Griffus

At this point maybe she could try to kill all the horrible people and just rule with fear or at least see how it goes, fear isnt good in the long term, but to save the world in six months it may be efficient. If she cuts the head she may be able to remplace it with competent people who will carry her will

João Vene

I guess Miriam needs to pivot to a "kill them all and rule as prophet queen"

Cirina

The rot is too dug in to cure piecemeal Mirian, you need to burn it all out.

Anonymous

Very rude she didn’t invite Ibrahim to the massacre

Faultedbeing

I did the mental equivalent of leaning back in my chair and kicking my legs in glee at that last little bit

V0lcano

if Mirian could use an undead army to occupy Baracuel it would certainly make things easier. Though she'd need to find some way to make them smart, or have some way to effectively be in multiple places at once with them.

Robert Mullins

Use the deeps to defeat the deeps.

YarrowFlowers

yea I think she just doesn’t have the temperament for manipulation. Maybe an undead army appearing through the gates would work?

Mountainking

Big oof.
