I recommend reading a dictators handbook. That is a pretty amazing piece of political philosophy uses game theory to help us understand how politicians are incentivized to behave if their goal is to stay in power and increase their power. It completely changed how I look at politics.

The one and the same. I haven't actually read her fiction, but I heard her tossing down so many great history facts at Worldcon that I had to buy her history book.
