There is no telling where Oda will go with this but I do like the idea. There are two comparisons I like to think about katakuri and lufy are like roger and whitebeard. But I also like the idea that Luffy and Coby are like Garp and Roger; on opposite sides but still respect eachother.

Imo one of the biggest reasons why everyone LOVES Katakuri is that he does care about his family. Even when his sister spits him in the face he is not gonna hit her or anything. He has allways shouldered the weight of the children of Big Mom and he is gonna keep doing it. In every way that matters: He was the perfect Big Brother too his siblings.

when i saw the first episode in this video for the first time/ read the manga at the time, my thought was: katakuri has killed or beat up everyone who has ever seen his mouth, luffy was the first and so far only one who didn't say a single word about it. when katakuri stepped on his scarf, that was the sign for me that from now on he doesn't give a fuck about what anyone says. after he took off his jacket with his family name on it, that was the first indication for me that he is "turning his back" on the Big Mom pirates at this moment and will become a "friend" of luffy in the course of the story, (like roger and whitebeard)

I would not say that these different modes of gear 4 are further powerups, they enhance one of luffys abbilitys to the max. Speed, movement, power ore endurence. He then uses one of the modes in relation to his oppononent, but i would not say that one of them is particular stronger then another.
