Just like how several of Big Mom's daughter's were loyal to their husbands rather than her, Katakuri is loyal to his siblings. In regards to how strong Shanks was before he lost his arm, he was Mihawk's rival for world's strongest swordsman. Him losing the arm is why Mihawk holds that title since if they had fought: 1: Mihawk wins because he was better 2: Mihawk wins because Shanks lost the arm 3: Mihawk loses because even without the arm Shanks is the better swordsman As such Mihawk and Shanks have not fought.
