well, to be honest, you can cast protection and inhence durability rank 15 on even a bikini and it will repel swords better then a full set of steel armor.

sometimes the freedom of movement afforded by not wearing armor is preferable, with the speed and agility advantage you can simply avoid getting hit. Of course if you're up against ranged enemies such as archers or knife throwers, or if you have to worry about multiple opponents coming at different angles, armor would probably work better.
