According to my history, it wasn't just the Spaniards and their guns, but also the diseases they carried to the "New World" that did in the local populace. Smallpox wiped out 99% of some tribes that never encountered the Spanish, or any other Europeans, along with measles, mumps, rubella, the plague, cholera, and so many others. History is more the story of wide scale bio-terrorism than simple colonization. I'm not trying to downplay the things my ancestors did, the Pilgrims among them; they were fucking monsters when you get right down to it. That said, though, even the folks with better intentions killed their new neighbors without ever lifting a finger. Orwell's "War Of The Worlds" is just as much historic as it is science fiction. The difference is, the invaders didn't have any keen biological defenses.
