Why is she riding a mens' bike? Traditional womens' bikes have a lowered top bar that curves to make room for your skirt, it's dang near impossible to ride a mens' bike in a skirt...

I don't think that's possible with a bicycle, at least not without a dose of magic. Even so-called women's bicycles have a lower frame to enable a woman in a dress or skirt to step over and ride the bike with both legs on each pedal. This was built as a means to prevent their lower cover from riding up due to the frame's position on men's (or unisex) bikes. Short skirt, pants, and shorts don't have this problem with unisex bikes.

The question I have is, what do keidaran bike pedals have to provide extra grip? Modern bikes have molded (plastic-shell pedals) or forged (metal pedals) spurs on the pedals to grip onto the bottom of your shoes, which necessitates the need for, well, shoes. I've seen wood and cardboard pedals for "can it be done" side projects, but those use sandpaper bonded to the pedals for the needed grip. Without that, your foot would just slip off the pedal as you go to drive your bike forward. More advanced retention systems are available, but for basic bicycles, engineers designed a cheap and effective method to retain your foot on the pedal. More foot on pedal means more efficient power delivered to the bike's gearing. Not seeing anything on Laura's foot mean either that there's basic sandpaper on the pedals (won't hurt much barefoot) or they're traditional pedals. In which case, ouch.
