It could also just be a way to make a flashlight of sorts for the phone. I would think you wouldn't want the antenna of sorts exposed like that. Set the phone down on a table the wrong way and it's a brick. Also, being one of the guys is a state of mind. And I'm talking on a very simple level. Natani's more one of the guys than about half the other guys in the comic. :3

So, I already commented with Tuna about this, but I’m also guessing the mana crystals are just what’s interfacing with the communication network, and not providing power to the phone. This being the Modern AU, they would likely have found out how to make the battery provide power instead of the mana crystals. We as humans are a lazy bunch, so if we can find easier or more efficient ways to do the same job, we’ll use that. The reason I use as to why is, as rare as lithium is, it can actually be recycled. Correct me if I’m wrong, but mana crystals need slumbering dragons to form, and can break if overtaxed with repeated discharge-recharge cycles. Natani has personal experience with doing exactly that, and he tried to preserve his limited stock as well as he could. Natani is one of the guys. Fight me.

I saw that, too. My guess is the bow is a clip-on; getting a pattern to show on a tie’s knot is a right pain in the ass. This is definitely a tie accessory, so even a practiced hand can have it misalign more often than not.
