Long answer: Keep in mind that not all trans people are the same, and some might not care about something that would cause intense discomfort for another. also keep in mind that I'm a cis guy, and that you should finds and read the perspectives of actual trans people, they can, and have, explained all of this infinitely better than I can. With that disclaimer aside, yes, It's generally disrespectful. A lot of trans people want to distance themselves as much as possible from their birth sex, to the point of getting corrective surgery to make their bodies more in line with their mind. For some, even hearing their birth name can cause significant distress. Pointing out their birth sex is essentially saying that what's in their pants, or used to be for that matter, is just as, if not more important than what's in their head. Consider this: You wouldn't point out a cis person's genitals in normal conversation, so why should you for trans people.
