More Chapter Four Pencilling!

The entirety of Chapter Three is now free online! Though… I am getting the strong impression that most people would rather wait for it to be a book. I don't track or monitor website visits, so I don't know how many people are reading the comic online, which I guess would be handy in this circumstance. Oh well! There it is! Please tell your friends! Celebrate this notable holiday by sharing a comic that does, at last, after 180 pages, actually include some pirates. Probably.
Semi-related: this week I learned about piperka.net, a website that makes it easy to stay up-to-date with static HTML webcomics like the pages on delilahdirk.com. It is gloriously "Web 1.0." I love it.

More Chapter Four pencil sneak peeks.

I am extremely pleased with this old man face:
And feet are tricky to draw — they're made of so many confounding shapes smushed together in confounding ways — so I like how this turned out:
And that means that I've been pencilling the fight sequence whose thumbnails I detailed in this video. When I re-thumbnailed the sequence, instead of five rows of panels per page, I spread it out to three. But that looked weird, proportions-wise. Now there are four rows and the fight lasts a page longer. It feels less compacted and probably reads better.
Related: Getty Images is usually where I go first for my photo reference, but they have a disappointingly sparse selection of nude figure photos, which is not helping me draw the back anatomy on One-Scar, the semi-nude pirate flag-bearer.
aaaaannnnnnd as I was typing this out I just realized I could open any one of my handful of anatomy books, which I keep within easy reach but I guess never think about. This literally did not occur to me at all until just now, when I was about to ask, "does anyone have recommendations for figure drawing sites???" *sigh*
An early post this week! I wanted to celebrate the only calendar holiday (I think?) that's thematically related to this project.

Ooh, that might have been the one I was thinking of. Shame you can't just browse the images (or maybe you can and I didn't see it), but I also get how that might be abused.

I mean, I'm never going to say 'don't use your anatomy books' obvs, but there is nothing like a good regular gesture drawing drill to make one comfortable with just diving into a pose. I use line-of-action.com as a substitute for proper life drawing – they have a large gallery of diverse models (both in appearance and, erm, quality) and you can set a few parameters and a time and go for hours if you want. It really does make a huge difference.
