J Banana

You're right about "bairns". It's a Scottish word for "children".

Lex

I’ve not read Esteban yet, but I have gobbled up Bonhomme’s Lucky Luke books and they are truly terrific.

DISCIPLINE AND CARE ARE MY HALLMARKS

Tony Cliff

Aha! Well, I should have assumed that, since I'm familiar with the phrase as, "children and fools should never see things half-done." Except I couldn't remember that that was the exact phrase, so I searched "fools should never see half-done" or something like that, saw "bairn" in the first result, shrugged and said "okay!" Interesting: https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=bairn

I *believe* it is originally Spanish, FWIW. I've only read a little ways into the book, but I think the Japanese is character-relevant. Or it's doing something neat. And all the signage and background details are in English too. It's a fun book!

Tony Cliff

Ah! Thank you for the kind words, and welcome aboard! It is a fun place to be, everyone around here is just the loveliest. Enjoy!

I'm new but glad to be here! I've followed and admired your work for years (especially your paneling, backgrounds, and colors, phew, always wonderful stuff), and I'm really enjoying this chance to see behind the scenes and follow thought processes, I think this will do a lot to improve and inspire my own work <3 thanks for the content, I'm already a fan!

Regarding NUIT COULEUR LARME, I'm a not so surprise that a French graphic novel has a newspaper headline in English but really surpised that it had an exclamation in Japanese (pg 44, panel 5), not even using romaji.

P.S. 'Bairn' is just Scots for 'child' – one of the Scandinavian fossil words in Scotland; it's 'barn' in modern Danish.

Aw wow, that first image really pops now! It looks like in a lot of these redos the secret is working more deliberately to play warm and cool colours off each other – was that a conscious decision or did it just happen to work out that way? Thanks for the reccs on new books! Your taste, as ever, is flawless.
