🕑 Added 2024-03-22 22:27:29 +0000 UTCLily turned to Hebet, her mind reeling from the events that had just transpired. The image of Nutitari being led away by the Hierophant lingered in her mind. She needed answers, and Hebet seemed to be the key.
"Hebet," Lily began, her voice steady despite the fatigue that tugged at her limbs, "who is Nutitari? What's her story?"
Hebet sighed, the sound weary and tinged with a sadness that spoke of a long history. She settled into a nearby chair, her movements graceful even in her exhaustion. "Nutitari is the daughter of Hekanakht, the High Priestess of the Order of Ankh-Mut," she explained, her gaze distant as if recalling memories long gone. "She was born into a life of privilege and power, destined to follow in her mother's footsteps. Her, Aziza, and I have been friends since we were children. She used to run away from her practice to play with us."
Lily suddenly felt her heart in her throat as Nutitari’s story reminded her of her past with Elysium.
"But she's not with the Order now," she observed.
Hebet shook her head, a rueful smile playing at the corners of her lips. "No, she's not. Nutitari has always had a rebellious streak, a desire to forge her own path. She saw the people suffering of the people, the sick and the downtrodden, and felt compelled to help them directly, not just through the grand rituals and the ceremonies the Order would put up. They... they like to present shows, to make everything into a spectacle. Nutitari just wanted to help and tend to the people that have been forgotten by everyone, even the most charitable [Priestesses] of the Order."
The dancer's words painted a picture of a young woman torn between duty and compassion – a healer at heart who yearned to make a difference in the lives of those who needed her most. Lily found herself drawn to Nutitari's story – she was a kindred spirit in this world.
"Her mother didn't take kindly to that, I presume," Lily mused, her mind already piecing together the strained relationship between Nutitari and the High Priestess, thinking of Adriana, her own mother.
"Not at all," Hebet confirmed, a flicker of anger sparking in her eyes. "Hekanakht sees Nutitari's defiance as a threat to the Order's authority. She's been trying to bring her back into the fold, to mould her into the perfect successor."
"And the [Hierophant]?" Lily asked, the image of the imposing figure still fresh in her mind.
"Sekerhab, the [Hierophant], is Hekanakht's right hand, her enforcer," Hebet explained, a shiver running through her at the mention of his name. "He's fiercely loyal to the High Priestess and the Order. Many whisper that he has powers beyond those of a normal Priest, but no one dares to question him openly."
Lily nodded, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place. Nutitari's defiance, Sekerhab's unwavering loyalty, and the High Priestess's iron grip on power – all parts of a larger game being played in the shadowed halls of the Order.
As Lily processed this new information, Hebet leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "There's something else you should know about the Order, Lily," she said, her eyes gleaming with a mix of excitement and trepidation. "Something that might interest you, given your unique abilities."
Lily's pulse quickened as her curiosity was ignited by Hebet's words. She leaned closer, her full attention fixed on the dancer.
Hebet's expression grew solemn as she continued, her voice low and urgent. "Lily, what you did with Aziza, the way you and Nutitari combined Death Magic and Light Magic to heal her... it's something the High Priestess would do anything to understand. She's obsessed with finding the balance between Ankh and Mut, and your abilities challenge everything she knows."
Lily felt a chill run down her spine. The realization that her unique skills could make her a target, a prize to be dissected and studied by those in power, was all too familiar. Memories of her time in the Church and the fear and torture she had faced flooded her mind.
But as quickly as the fear had come, a fierce determination rose to meet it. Lily clenched her fists, feeling the strength that coursed through her veins, the power she had honed through trials and tribulations. She was no longer the helpless girl she had been, no longer a pawn to be manipulated and controlled.
"If the High Priestess comes for me," Lily declared, her voice steady and unwavering, "I'll be ready. I've faced worse and come out stronger. If it comes to it, I'll deal with it."
Hebet's eyebrows rose at Lily's declaration.
"Lily," Hebet said softly, reaching out to place a hand on the girl's shoulder, "you're clearly strong, and I don't doubt your abilities. But the Order of Ankh-Mut is not to be underestimated. They have eyes and ears everywhere, and their influence runs deep in all of Amunara's circles."
Lily met Hebet's gaze, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "It doesn't matter, Hebet. I've learned that running away only leads to more pain. I won't hide who I am or what I can do. If the Order comes knocking, I'll face them head-on. If they want to know what I'm capable of, I'll be happy to show them."
The [Dancer] was perplexed but didn't pursue the topic.
"Just be careful, Lily," Hebet warned, her tone laced with genuine concern. "The High Priestess is not known for her mercy, and Sekerhab is a formidable opponent. If you do end up facing them, make sure you're prepared."
Lily took a deep breath, the weight of Hebet's words settling on her shoulders.

As Lily and Hebet discussed the implications of Lily's unique abilities, a soft groan drew their attention to the bed where Aziza lay. The warrior stirred, her eyelids fluttering open as consciousness slowly returned to her. Lily immediately moved to her side, her healer's instincts taking over as she assessed Aziza's condition.
Aziza's eyes, a striking amber hue, focused on Lily's face, confusion, and surprise etched into her features. "Who... who are you?" she asked, her voice hoarse from disuse.
Lily smiled gently, her hand resting on Aziza's shoulder in a comforting gesture. "I'm Lily. Hebet brought me here to heal you."
Hebet stepped forward, tears of relief shimmering in her eyes. "Aziza, you're awake! Lily and Nutitari—they saved your life. The disease that was ravaging your body, they managed to eradicate it completely."
Aziza's gaze shifted between Lily and Hebet, disbelief washing over her face. She pushed herself up into a sitting position, wincing slightly at the effort. Lily moved to support her, but Aziza waved her off, determined to sit up on her own.
"I remember the sickness," Aziza said, her brow furrowed in concentration. "It was like a living nightmare, consuming me from within. I thought... I thought I was going to die."
Lily nodded, understanding the warrior's plight all too well. "The parasites that infected you were unlike anything I've ever seen. It took a combination of Death Magic and Light Magic to purge them from your system."
Aziza's eyes widened at the mention of Death Magic. As she studied Lily's face, taking in the youthful features and the earnest expression, her confusion gave way to curiosity.
"You're so young," Aziza marveled, reaching out to touch Lily's face with a shaking hand.
Before Lily could respond, Aziza did something that left the young Alchemist stunned. The warrior slid off the bed, her movements still slightly unsteady, and knelt before Lily, kissing the ground between her feet.
Lily felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment, unused to such displays of reverence. "Please, Aziza, you don't need to do that. I was just doing what was needed to help."
Aziza raised her head, meeting Lily's gaze with an intensity that took the Alchemist's breath away. "You saved my life, Lily. That is a debt I cannot easily repay. Tell me, what can I do for you? How can I even begin to express my gratitude?"
Hebet, sensing an opportunity, chimed in. "Actually, Aziza, Lily is interested in getting into Khnum's Palace. She has some unfinished business there. I have my own ideas on how to get her in, but if you already had an in, it would make everything simpler."
Aziza sighed, shaking her head as she rose to her feet. "I'm afraid I can't help with that, Hebet. My influence doesn't extend that far, and Khnum's Palace is heavily guarded."
As the conversation lulled, Hebet cleared her throat, a serious expression settling over her face. "Aziza, there's something else we need to discuss. It's about Nutitari."
Aziza's brow furrowed, concern etching itself into her features. "What about her?"
Hebet sighed, the weight of the situation heavy on her shoulders. "The Order took her back. Sekerhab came for her himself. We need to talk about what this means and what we can do to help her."
Aziza nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. She turned to Lily, her eyes softening. "You must be exhausted after everything you've done today, Lily. Please, stay here and rest. We have much to discuss."
Lily, feeling the fatigue settling deep inside her bones, accepted the offer gratefully.

Lily found herself in a comfortable room, which provided a much-needed break from the chaotic events of the day. The space was uncomplicated yet refined, with intricately woven tapestries embellishing the walls and a luxurious bed that enticed her to rest. She sank into the soft mattress, taking a moment to breathe and reflect on everything that had occurred.
As she closed her eyes, the level-up notifications from her efforts to cure Aziza flooded her mind.

The Mandala of Ravenous Eradication stood out among the rest. It was the first time she had created a Mandala without any diminishing adjectives like "Lesser" or "Inferior" attached to its name. The realization filled her with a sense of pride and accomplishment – it was a validation of her growth and the countless hours she had devoted to honing her skills.
As Lily basked in the glory of her accomplishments, a darker thought began to surface. The memory of John's betrayal and theft ignited a spark of anger within her. She couldn't help but imagine confronting him, her fists connecting with his smug face with a satisfying crunch. The fantasy played out in vivid detail, with John's features contorting in pain and shock as she exacted her revenge.
And then there was Vince. Lily's brow furrowed as she thought of the infuriating man, his gruff demeanor, and his dismissive attitude. She could picture herself wiping that condescending look off his face with a well-placed punch, watching him stumble back in surprise. The image brought a small, vindictive smile to her lips.
But as quickly as the violent fantasies had come, they were replaced by a different sort of thought. Hebet's words echoed in her mind – the teasing lilt in the [Dancer]'s voice as she mentioned Vince's alleged interest in Lily. The implication had been clear, and despite her best efforts to dismiss it, Lily felt a traitorous heat rising in her cheeks.
She shook her head, trying to banish the unwelcome notion.
Lily groaned, burying her face in the soft pillows. She couldn't believe she was even entertaining such thoughts. She had more important matters to focus on, like retrieving her stolen ring and unraveling the mysteries of Amunara and whatever connection they had to Lucas. She couldn't allow herself to be sidetracked by something as frivolous as a potential crush.
With a determined huff, Lily pushed herself up from the bed. She needed to clear her mind, to refocus on her goals.
As she stood up, Lily caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Her reflection stared back at her, eyes bright with resolve and a hint of mischief. She smiled – a slow, wicked curve of her lips. John and Vince had no idea what they were in for. She would make them regret ever crossing her path.

The morning sun streamed through the open windows of Aziza's dining room, casting a warm glow on the table laden with a variety of dishes. The aroma of freshly baked flatbreads, tender lamb seasoned with cumin and coriander, and bowls of full medames adorned with olive oil and garlic filled the air.
Lily, Aziza, and Hebet sat around the table, their plates filled with the delicacies: succulent figs and dates, creamy hummus seasoned with tahini and lemon, and refreshing salads of cucumber and tomato, drizzled with a pomegranate dressing.
As they ate, Hebet broached the subject of Lily's predicament. "Aziza, Lily is here because she needs our help. Someone stole a valuable ring from her, and we believe the thief is staying at Khnum's Palace."
Aziza raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the story. "And how do you propose we get Lily into Khnum's Palace? It's not exactly an easy feat."
Hebet leaned forward, a conspiratorial glint in her eye. "I've been thinking about that. Khnum is likely to hold a banquet after the Red Dune bandits are dealt with. It's the perfect opportunity for us to gain access to the palace."
Aziza's eyes widened in surprise. "Someone is taking on the Red Dune bandits? That's a dangerous mission. Who would be foolish enough to attempt such a thing?"
Hebet smiled, a touch of amusement in her voice. "Apparently, the High Priestess commissioned the Blaze Runners, the Hawthorne Brothers' mercenary company, to handle the task. It seems they impressed her by discovering the Temple of Mut-Ankh in the Valley of Scorpions."
Lily's ears perked up at the mention of the Hawthorne Brothers, her mind immediately conjuring images of Vince and John.
"If there's going to be a banquet," Hebet continued, "there will be [Dancers]. And that's where we come in. I plan to train Lily as a dancer so she can blend in and gain access to the palace during the celebration."
Lily nearly choked on her bread, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Wait, what? You want to train me as a dancer? I'm not sure that's a good idea, Hebet. I'm not exactly known for my grace and poise."
Aziza chuckled, clearly amused by Lily's reaction.
"Don't underestimate me," Hebet told her with a catty glint. "The campaign against the bandits will take a few months to conclude, which gives us plenty of time to prepare you for the role."
Lily sighed, realizing that she didn't have much choice in the matter. If this were the best way to get into Khnum's Palace and retrieve her ring, she would have to trust Hebet's judgment.
"Fine," she conceded, "I'll do it. But I'm warning you, I'm not exactly a natural when it comes to dancing."
Aziza smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry, Lily. We'll make sure you're ready. In the meantime, why don't you tell us a bit more about yourself? What kind of fighter are you?"
Lily hesitated for a moment, considering her words. "I'm an Alchemist," she began, "but I'm still learning. I have some combat skills, but I know I'm lacking in many aspects. I want to get better, to be able to hold my own in any situation."
Aziza's gaze sharpened, a flicker of interest sparking in her eyes. "A fighter, you say? If you want to improve your combat abilities, I would be honored to train you. I'm considered one of the three strongest people in Amunara... or at least I was before that nasty disease. I reckon it won't take long to regain my spot, though."
Lily's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Really? You would be willing to train me?"
Aziza nodded, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Of course. It's the least I can do to repay you for saving my life. And who knows? Perhaps it will be enough to repay a chunk of the debt I now owe you."
Lily felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of training with Aziza. The opportunity to learn from such a renowned warrior was too good to pass up. She glanced at Hebet, who gave her an encouraging nod.
"Thank you, Aziza," Lily said, her voice filled with gratitude. "I would be honored to learn from you."

If Lily knows that Vince and John will be out of Khnum's palace, why would she wait for them to get back rather than find them on the road to or from their mission? Waiting a few months gives her a chance to learn to dance and fight better, and a palace infiltration sounds interesting, so I understand narratively why she'd wait. I just don't understand why the character wouldn't try to waylay the brothers on the road, where it would likely be easier (and sooner) than a palace infiltration.
