We can go the way of the elves looking for a combat formation.
Another alternative is to put the unit in a more classic pose, with weapons up and include a small diorama for the front row. For example the leader of the unit drinking from a human slave while another holds his helmet on his knees.
Which one do you prefer?

They can always be used as grave guard. I don't think that's a big problem.

I have chosen for the combat formation, but I would prefer to see mounted versions before Vampire Halberdiers as those are not really useful for the games I play. I know selfish post. ;-)

The diorama is such a no brainer for me, forward spears are a pain in the ass to line other units against , and the diorama will look better

Dioramas are more work, that's why almost nobody makes them. But I want to be sure that you will appreciate it. Putting us to more work so that you like it less is crazy XD

Because approach is completely different. If we want to make a diorama we need to take attention away from the front lines which is incompatible with lots of spears pointing forward. Posing spears in attack is more complex, they are very different poses, and you have to worry that they can fit together. The spears upwards are simpler, and it gives us extra time to do some more complex sculpting. From composition to execution, it is impossible to plan both at the same time.

imo, less is more. A combat formation can be impressive but it rarely has as much feel and story as a smal diorama.
